  • Well, I had a grocery list before I looked at lemmy today. Now I have a grocery list with "French fries and poblanos" hastily scribbled at the bottom of it

  • I dont have a ton of respect for people making or enforcing exclusionary spaces on public message boards like that. If they really wanted a separate safe space they'd have something like beehaw with moderated sign-ups and a closed door policy to people who dont go through the verification. I dont care about it enough to argue and I go with a "block and let live" strategy regarding those kind of places, but im also not about to spend time or energy policing myself beyond the aforementioned "on topic, dont be a dick" because a bunch of people intentionally chose the wrong hosting tool for an exclusionary community so they can (in my opinion) performatively other people they dont like in a public space.

  • If I'm making a post I make sure it's relevant to the community I'm posting to, but just commenting on posts that show up in my feed I dont bother most of the time. Most message board rules boil down to "stay roughly on topic and dont be a dick to the other people here" anyway; you probably dont need to know most message board rules if youre adhering to that.

  • You could try running tails on your laptop. Nothing guarantees resting privacy like removable boot media

  • Yeah turns out two years of above inflation pay rises dont make up for 40 or 50 years of wage stagnation. Fucking wankers

  • I just block that community. Not like out of malice or anything but it prevents me from commenting on a post without looking at the comm name. I try to make a habit of not spending time in places where I am not welcome

  • Whenever the cats that have been in my life are doing dangerous stuff like that I hiss at them and chase them off. It's very effective at getting them to stop trying to kill themselves and it doesn't seem to upset them longterm

  • In any quantity? Some nutritionally complete food that avoids as many allergens as possible. Probably some kind of fortified legume and veggie paste. With that kind of magical power, I'd be looking to slay one of the horsemen of the apocalypse

  • In seriousness, a lot of particle physics has to do with smashing shit together really really hard and then studying what comes out. If I am for instance trying to observe a k meson, the way I'd do that is to accelerate a bunch of gold nuclei up to 10 or 12 TeV (i dont remember how fast that is in m/s; some small fraction of the speed of light), smash those gold nuclei into eachother, then look at the spray of particles that comes out. The expected products of a collision like that are heavily dependent on what you started with before any smashing occurs, so particle physicists do tend to care pretty significantly about macro molecules like metal. Mostly because of their decay products, but the metal is important

  • Badass

  • I never got this. The people in my life who call themselves sluts are some of the warmest most caring people in my life. I have to remember not to call people slut as a compliment most of the time because of the people I know who choose that title for themselves

  • This is bad practice. You should always have an exit condition when using a wait statement or you might get stuck in an infinite loop

  • People who live near the beach you're trying to drink on. Nothing says "I dont respect nature or your home" better than bringing a bunch of disposable beer bottles that you will statistically probably leave in the sand or throw into the ocean as soon as youre done with them. This is probably more a rant about overtourism than it is about beer bottles, but seeing a bottle thats designed to bring to the beach made my blood boil.

  • Something about referring to Lewinsky in that context as a consenting adult rubs me wrong. With the power imbalance between the two it feels like a situation where consent is impossible. It feels like the same kind of power imbalance that attracts rich men to pedophilia, and it certainly doesn't help that Bill is almost definitely going down if the epstein stuff ever gets out

  • My first speeding ticket happened during college. I had to take a few weeks driving course, cut luxuries out of my life for a month, and pick up extra shifts at my job for a month to handle it. It was an overall miserable experience.

My next speeding ticket happened while I was an engineer. I literally paid it off on my phone while the officer was doing paperwork on the side of the road AND gave them an extra $100 because I could do that instead of any kind of driving course. I stopped caring about it at all 10 minutes later. It was fucking wild to see "laws are only for the poors" in action like that

  • Sometimes; I just sprinkle in; a bunch of random semicolons confidently to see i;f anybody else is is confident enough; in their understanding of proper semi;colon usage to call me out

  • I think there's a disconnect between people who use discord as an IM client and people who use discord as a way to find communities. Ive been using discord since like the friends and family alpha, and I've never once joined a server that was larger than "4-12 people I know irl who hate group texts." The way I understand and think about discord is drastically different from somebody who uses it more like a decentralized forum full of hobby or creator driven communities. I'd guess that the latter half is what is being referred to as dangerous for trans folk, but again I cannot confirm as discord is functionally equivalent to like MSN messenger for me
