  • That's a fair distinction. That being said, at their core llms are just big functions. You could cover a dartboard in subfields of physics, toss a dart randomly, and I'd bet money you hit a field that finds use for the bessel functions for instance. I am not informed enough on the specifics of llms to say either way, but there's definitely precedent for "we found this really powerful function and it turns out it accurately predicts 10 shitloads of unrelated systems."

To double down on my devils advocacy, the projects I have personally seen or been consulted for that fit the form "use llm to solve non-nlp problem" are 99% propelled by "funding for Ai buzzwords flows freely" and "understanding of the limitations of different kinds of ai is rare"

  • It blows to grow up and realize you were socialized in a society that at some level views you as little more than fuel to be burned for the military industrial complex

  • Medicine discovery is one of the few fields with ai where the juice is worth the squeeze. Filtering through billions of different molecule geometries to compare them all to eachother is a task that ai does well and humans do extremely slowly

  • I grew up near a Thai Buddhist temple in the panhandle of Florida, and it was about the same. They did a charity cookout type thing every weekend, which was open to the public and they did a bunch of cultural and religious ceremonies right next to or right there in the little marketplace they set up for the cookout. It was a great way to kill a few hours on a sunday; $5 or $6 for a plate of pad thai and a skewer of thai bbq pork, see some cool ceremonies, sometimes end up talking with somebody from the temple for a bit. Absolutely blew my mind that a religious gathering could be so actively enjoyable after I grew up going to mass

  • Idk about yall but I am better than a stegosauraus. Im social (allegedly), intelligent (allegedly), and my thagomizer is magnificent (undeniably)

  • This is a shit take. The meme is showing two different stereotypes of college freshman. There is not a qualitative difference between the "hard" sciences and the others; the biologists climatologists and psychologists I've known all adhere to the same scientific method and mathematical rigor I learned getting my handful of grad and postgrad degrees in physics math and compsci. The only real difference I've seen is that "soft" sciences tend to work on problems with more stochastic moving parts, making them harder to understand on average. They're not easier, you're just ignorant of the complexity and too arrogant to consider the expertise and accomplishments of others.

  • I have literally designed and implemented aircraft parts based on inspiration I got listening to somebody infodump about an animal they were studying. Learn the things other people care about. It will make you better at what you care about and probably a better person in the process

  • It's hard while traveling, but eating even remotely healthy will make your experience a lot better. One of those fruit and veggie trays you can get from grocery stores plus like a loaf of bread and a thing of hummus can make a great dinner on the road for a family, I try to do something like that at least twice a week when im traveling. Panda express is a surprisingly decent place to get fairly plain rice chicken and broccoli, which is great for both nervous stomachs and people trying to maintain any kind of fitness on the road. Last I'd say careful not to give yourself kidney stones with energy drinks if youre doing a lot of long haul drives between stops

  • They should be. Russia would have never set a toe in Ukraine if they kept the nukes, and the fuckery of Russia invading and the 'civilized world' sitting around with thumbs up their asses since 2014 seems like proof that having nuclear weapons is a prerequisite to maintaining sovereignty

  • I bet those backwards savages even butter their toast on the wrong side

  • I still vote we do it. Guaranteed Nature publication for whoever figures out the infrastructure required to pull it off

  • (...) of uniform density in a neutral vacuum.

  • Vibes. I look at it and try to guess and submit a number within 5 or 10 seconds. It may not be as accurate but I feel like I get more benefit training my ability to estimate at a glance than I do training my ability to do math and spatial reasoning assisted by math. Im already really good at math and math assisted spatial reasoning

  • I have the same response, though I've always ascribed a different reason to it. I like to think about what people say before I respond. People are uncomfortable with silences. The conversation flows in a much more smooth and socially acceptable way if I can fill my thinking pauses with the other person repeating what they just said. I dont think I'd do it if people didnt need to incessantly fill every silence in a conversation with words

  • Looks like a meal where the burgers wish the potatoes were fries and the potatoes wish the burgers were chicken sandwiches. Regardless, still looks tasty!

  • YOLO

  • "Unsolvable" integral? Analytical math in shambles

  • Context tells me that was probably a joke, but if youre actually having trouble spraying palmetto bugs try spraying them with windex. They actually breath through their carapace, and the surface tension of windex makes it so they almost immediately stop getting oxygen --> stop moving. Gruesome, but you stop thinking about that the first time you wake up to one of those fuckers in your bed

  • The only real way to escape corporate enshittification and bots is to just pick up and move whenever marketing ghouls start to show up. Im quite happy with lemmy and the fediverse right now, but Im under no illusion this place will last more than like 3 years tops before its time to move on to the next platform with a user base small enough that its not worth astroturfing with ads and corpo propaganda
