  • Israel is the type of control-heavy far-right state other dictators wish they could govern, and it's made possible by Western money and technology (I was going to name just the US but my country of Canada, among others, is not blameless either). This news also sucks because there's no way that tech is staying in Israel only. Citizens of the world better brace for convictions via AI facial recognition.

"Our computer model was able to reconstruct this image of the defendant nearly perfectly. It got the hands wrong and one eye is off-center, but otherwise that's clearly them committing the crime."

  • "Woke" is just code for "anything I don't like, don't understand, or wasn't raised with". Part of the problem is that people don't like their way of life being challenged by the mere existence of cyclists and public transit. The other part is that in many countries the infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, etc) aren't optimized for cycling and that can cause problems when cars, pedestrians, and cyclists are dodging each other.

  • This is the national version of "Police department investigates widespread claims of police brutality, finds police innocent." APAB.

  • Maple syrup shortage? Canadians everywhere:

  • I don't know - it's possible as I've heard of Islamic State being linked to several nations. However, OP's article mentions Afghanistan specifically:

"A U.S. intelligence official told The Associated Press that U.S. intelligence agencies had learned the group’s branch in Afghanistan was planning an attack in Moscow and shared the information with Russian officials."

  • Putin's government was warned weeks in advance and dropped the ball badly. Now they need to turn bad press into useful press by placing blame on Ukraine so Russia stays focused on that war. I sincerely doubt they have the military power available to start meaningful reprisals against Islamic State in Afghanistan.

  • In March 2023, the UN Human Rights Council received a report about the over 700,000 Israeli settlers living in illegal settlements on Palestinian land. In the last 10 years covered (2012-2022) Israeli settlers increased by over 1/3rd from 520k to over 700k. The UN investigators were able to confirm 3,372 acts of violence by Israeli settlers during that same period, which averages out to almost daily violence for 10 years.

Displacing and killing/injuring Palestinians is long-term Israeli policy pursued systematically for decades now. Oct. 7th just gave Zionists the excuse to speed up the process.

  • Slava Ukraini brother/sister :)

  • To the best of my knowledge Canada has been a steadfast ally to the Ukrainians. In February they announced additional support in 2024, including just over 3 billion in military and economic assistance among many other smaller initiatives. This story also says Canada is willing to participate in an ammunition bulk-buy being quarterbacked by the Czechs that may see about 800,000 artillery rounds sourced and delivered to Ukraine.

  • Canada paused military shipments to Israel on Jan. 8th, has stopped for realsies now apparently, and resumed UNRWA funding before any payments were missed. On Feb. 14th the Prime Ministers of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand issued a joint statement calling any Rafah offensive "catastrophic" and calling for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel. My guess is evidence of war crimes and potentially genocide is so undeniable that countries are scrambling to distance themselves from what will be years of condemnation by the ICJ and other regulatory/watchdog institutions.

I'm Canadian, and for months I've been posting about how my country has given Israel too much support given the evidence of long-standing apartheid and other human rights violations (and war crimes since Oct. 7th). My first post on Lemmy was actually about how ashamed I was that Western countries like Canada were being so silent about the Gazan crisis. Hopefully measures like stopping sales and promoting a two-state solution are first steps on the road to stopping the suffering of the Palestinians and making up for those months of inaction or even unethical support.

  • Reddit doesn't function like a real business (i.e. most of the work is unpaid volunteers, users and especially mods). There's no genuine site-wide code of ethics beyond what will actually get them criminal charges. The written rules don't matter - many moderators are unpaid bullies who permaban if their feelings are hurt and ignore questionable content they agree with. That system of banning users based on opinion kills discussion of "unapproved" views and sorts people into forums where their favorite opinions (and often outright hatreds) are popular. Loathe a particular race/gender/political ideology etc? Just find a subreddit where the mods agree and you'll be fine saying some truly terrible stuff. Read the bloodthirsty posts on r/worldnews and tell me if the site-wide rules on not promoting violence or racism apply. For these reasons and more I don't think anyone should be buying into their IPO because they aren't a reliable business.

I don't know if Lemmy is different because I've been here for less than a month, but at least here it feels like you can have different opinions and the worst that happens is you eat downvotes. Plus a lot of the really unethical takes are usually checked pretty hard in my (limited) experience by the users, which doesn't happen when the only other voices are basically guaranteed to agree with you (a la most of Reddit).

The rest of this is just my Reddit survivor tale so if you don't care stop here. I got invited to the IPO on the same week I got a 3-day site-wide ban after appealing a subreddit permaban for a fairly popular comment that the US should stop funding Israel and give the money to Ukraine (on a post about how the US is having trouble finding money for Ukraine). In those words, no hate speech or racism etc. When I asked why I was banned I got a 4-word insult as the only communication back. I'm not usually a conspiracy theorist, but it sure felt like I was being deliberately censored/punished for high-ish profile "dangerous" anti-Israeli opinion. May not be the case, but it was my first site-wide ban ever for a comment that broke no written rules.

My Reddit account is 13 years old and in 2023 I think I made about 100k karma, primarily with comments about history, education, and in one case a post about how awesome sperm whales are. My experience mirrors what I've read happens to others enough that Reddit has lost my participation (I've only posted 2x in the last 3 months, down from a few times daily) and my faith. I only go back to check on specialist communities (video game tips etc) and almost never participate anymore. Frankly I hope it either changes to allow for discussion or dies.

  • Jared Kushner is the only man Trump secretly thinks might be better than him because he actually got to sleep with Ivanka while Trump only fantasizes about it. Did you know Trump compared Stormy Daniels to Ivanka moments before cornering her coming out of the bathroom and having sex with her?

"If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her. Isn’t that terrible? How terrible? Is that terrible?" and "If I weren’t happily married and, ya know, her father …"

"Aides said he talked about Ivanka Trump’s breasts, her backside, and what it might be like to have sex with her, remarks that prompted Kelly to remind the president that Ivanka was his daughter,” writes Miles Taylor, a former chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security, in his new book, according to Newsweek."

  • Related to selling property that Palestinians already own: synagogues in Canada and the US lined up to have Jews-only illegal real estate sales of West Bank properties on stolen land earlier this month. Here's a Jewish man talking about why the sales are illegal and how he organized a protest of the one in his town in New Jersey.

To be explicitly clear though - neither Jews nor synagogues as a whole are the problem (as evidenced by the linked conscientious Jewish protester for instance). I'm protesting the behavior of THESE synagogues and Jew-only events the same way I would if evangelical churches were holding white-only sales events of illegal settlements. Racism is wrong, and so are racially-restricted real estate sales (and more so for being on stolen land).

  • The savagery and deceit coming from Israel is just mind blowing. "We don't want any official rulings taken to keep people from starving, which by the way isn't our fault"? Hey Israel, no one is buying your lies - either (most) folks oppose your blockades or they support it because of bloodlust but either way everyone knows.

  • Given the CCP involvement in their country's businesses, I think there will be a lot more involved than would be in other sales. There are already articles talking about how the sale will take longer than the 6-month timeline (if it passes the Senate/President and any potential legal challenges).

  • For odd reasons I like a very specific shade of green (around 525nm, I'd call it "emerald") - it shows a lot of promise in reducing migraine headaches. It's an example of what's called photobiomodulation, which is a technical term for using low-energy infrared/visible light to signal your body to do certain things (as opposed to harmful high-energy radiation like UV rays). Being in green spaces can also help people's mental health and that's still being investigated.

Another example is using red light therapy to help wounds heal faster and improve skin quality. Red or infrared light exposure for therapeutic reasons was investigated by NASA and adopted by the US Navy.

So it's probably different reasons than you were expecting in a longer answer, but I love those colors because they heal people :)

  • I'm sure AIPAC has told Netanyahu they won't let US politicians stop the flow of money and arms to Israel (AIPAC is spending 100 million to keep progressives out of office). The criticism is just theater. Biden only started changing his language when people started voting "uncommitted" in battleground states, and he is still shipping arms to Israel every 36 hours. The Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid is barely mentioned officially, the air-dropped aid is woefully inadequate and little more than virtue signalling. 3 months ago, when Gazan civilian casualties were at 21,000+, Congress passed a bill making criticizing Zionism/Israel legally equal to antisemitism. All this shows that Netanyahu just needs to keep accepting aid and let Biden talk for political reasons until he's re-elected.
