  • You somehow manage to willfully misread or miss the entire point. Yes of course Hartford can't match the per student municipal funding of suburban Connecticut. That is why I said that the issue is the school funding is being done on the municipal level.

Municipal property taxes paying for schools reduces the equalizing effect that state funding should have.

Yes, New England Republicans do tend to be much different than other states. No educational spending is not solely tied to party platform that ignores that blue states on average have higher house hold incomes and GDP due to historical & socioeconomic factors.

This is just yelling at clouds rather than seeking meaningful solutions to resolve issue. You are complaining that senators are upset about the failure of the educational system. Btw one of those senators introduced legislation to prevent this from happening again. Link.

They're certainly not going to admit to systemic failures.

Did you read the article? What do you think "State Senate Minority Leader Stephen Harding and Sen. Eric Berthel said in their Dec. 19 letter. 'We continue to seek accountability as to how this student was illiterate when she graduated and how the system failed her year after year'" they meant when they wrote this.

  • I was stating the CT Republicans had little to no impact on the outcome of this student's education because they have little impact on local politics in such a blue area. And resulting should have no reason to presume that any policy stances of their have an impact on the people of Hartford.

If Trump stripped the Dept of Education on day one that still would be irrelevant here as this student is the victim of over a decade of the school system failing them.

On your BTW, my point wasn't about Hartford's education costs but more on broader educational costs. In suburban CT well funded schools get nearly 70% of their expenses paid for by local property taxes. The failure of the city of Hartford to raise funds on the municipal level vs other municipalities is relevant here. Which of course stems from the difference in economics status between their citizens. Hence my critique of local funding playing such a big role.

CT has some of the finest public schools in the nation. But they sure as hell are not the ones in Hartford.

  • "Republican play book" dude it's Connecticut. And none the less Hartford. That city hasn't had a Republican mayor since 1971.

The issue is that educational funding is predominantly on the municipal level, rather than the state level.

The only mention in the article about Republicans is the CT Republicans being outraged about how the schools have failed this child. Which is entirely justifiable.

But rather than look at the underlying system issues lets resort to flinging mud at people who had zero impact in the current situation.

  • They're probably seeing if this was an act of economic terrorism. Feds are big on interstate commerce.

  • The GOA backs him and given his speech at their conference I'm willing to bet he isn't keen on doing that.

  • This is a motion to dismiss not an answer. That's how those work. It is linked to by the journalist in the article.

  • Yeah that's how it works.

  • Other comments in this thread reflect a lack of appreciation for the prior system. Once upon a time the king's men could arrest legislators unfavorable to him to bar unfavorable legislation. Today we have legislation barring the arrest of representatives while the house is in session.

  • I have another comment on this post which may be helpful for you. TLDR Biden's Admin had tried to protect trans people under the ADA via executive agency. Likely outcome is that will be reversed but the ADA (and similar or related protections) & IMO will not see broader impacts. This is because the law that passed Congress and was sign by the president specifically didn't include trans people when it was signed (along with a number of other peoples most trans people would be offended to be grouped with).

Tldr tldr: this likely stops trans people from being in the ADA's protection.

  • Full complaint is case 5:24-cv-00225-C filed in the US District Court Northern District of Texas.

It seems that the heart of the lawsuit is that the Biden Admin tried to get gender dysphoria to be a disability under the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ADA by means of administrative rule making. The text of both of those laws as written *by Congress and signed by the Executive have clauses stating they do not encompass trans people. (Cites are in line 2 of complaint)

I'd wager the constitutional argument on the spending power is to preserve another option for appeal. Realistically I think they'll probably win and get the Final Rule held to be a violation of the APA and struck down without the rest of Section 504 being touched. Their constitutional argument boils down to if the Final Rule isn't violating the law the law is too vague to be enforceable.

    *Edit

  • Re-read my comment above. They only have power which we vest in them.

  • How can they listen to the voters if the voters never speak to them. My comment was not on the DNC or RNC but on the core of all forms of representative democracies.

  • Do you know the name of the member of your state's House of Representatives that represents your district? When was the last time you spoke to your federal representative? Do he/she not answer your calls because they have to many constituents? Talk to people in your neighborhood about the need for more representatives in the house.

All sovereign power comes from the people. Read: you are that guy.

  • Shout out to the menial workers at Apple Maps who are going to have a crap day at work tomorrow because of the thing their boss made them do, so they don't get fired and replaced by someone else who would do it.

  • I agree with the sentiment on Gulf of Americas. But I think the singular (and referring to land of both continents) makes more sense. Firstly because it rolls off the tongue better. Secondly because the existence of the 'North America' and 'South America' both imply that those lands are parts of a larger body of land called America. North America being the Northern half of America. While South America presides in the Southern half.

'America' being the United States is only reinforced by the fact that the United States is the most significant nation in global politics East of the Pacific and West of the Atlantic.
