  • Driveway, parkway

  • The impact of personal vehicles is bigger than numbers compared to other industries. People lose their lives to careless drivers, emissions cause local air quality conerns, road maintance destroys city budgets, parking lots destroy city density, and a whole slew of other economical, environmental and social impacts. Many of our major societial issues today of consummerism, failing infrastructure, housing costs, and disease can be linked in part to car dependancy.

  • The treating it normal and not making it a special statement is truly an incredible part. The kids watching the show would have noticed if they made a big deal about and that would have, in some ways, impacted how they processed it. It would stick out more, feel special, feel like you have to make a point of it any time you included a black person, or maybe even be mistaken as humor or some other message. Instead Mr. Rogers treats him just like everyone else and thats the message that ultimately reaches the children. The why doesn't matter at that time, just be kind.

  • Yes, but thats not what OP was saying in their post. They were comparing everyone relying on their private automobile as their transportation is the same as relying on private, diesel generators as their MAIN source of power.

That said a battery backup may be as viable as a generator depending on your demand. For me I'd just need the fridge and a sump pump running, maybe the furnace depending on weather during an extended outage.

  • There is also something to be said for emission controls. A coal or NG power plant can have much more cleaning and scrubbing processes. It also shifts the emissions that do slip through to a less densely populated area or at least emits it higher in the atmosphere instead of at street level.

  • You included all the proof we need in your comment. Grok has been proven to do it, others may be doing it as well. And if its isn't promoting fascism maybe its promoting some other ideology. The point is these models are not unbiased, and in many cases are being manipulated by their owners.

  • Yea, if thats the issue apps like tiktok better be on their refusal list as well.

  • They mean pleasant and safe in their neighborhood. They dont want to have to drive 1 hour out of the city to be able to walk without constant traffic noise or the risk of being injured by a car. A 6 lane stroad is absolutely unpleasant to walk on. Its loud, the air is polluted with emissions, tire dust, and brake dust. It dangerous as there is no meaningful barrier between you and cars, a distracted or drunk driver can easily harm a pedestrian on the sidewalk.

I specifically took a longer route that involved walking up and over a hill to get grocceries because it avoided the busier and congested roads. Walking uphill both ways was more pleasant than the direct, flatter route on a 6 lane road.

  • We currently pay to maintain car infrastructure regardless if we own a car or not. Per mile traveled, transit is far cheaper to maintain than roads are.

  • Frequent tranist. Missing a tram is no big deal if another is coming in 5 minutes. It needs to be a tram with priority tracks and signals so it stays on schedule.

Missing a tram and losing 5 minutes is the same as hitting a couple extra red lights or being delayed due to construction or a collision. Planning to arrive a few minutes early fixes any issues you would have from possible delays.

  • You'd have a hard time driving through that snow as well, so there are snow plows and such that make the road drive able. Most places that accomdate winter cycling have dedicated snow equipment for the dedicated cycle lanes.

  • These systems would probably work a lot better in Canada if Canada built half decent transit. Many of those trips could likely be replaced with decent transit, freeing up cars for trips more specific to that use case.

  • Sorry, you drill and process your own oil for your own fuel supply?

Edit: i see in other comments you have an electric car and generate electricity. That is an energy supply not a fuel supply. And what about your bulldozer? Did you buy a modern electric one or does it rely on fuel? Certainly your diesel generator relies on fuel.

  • Funding renewables while encouraging people that the electric hummer is a "green choice" is more what i was getting at.

  • The renewables can fit in if we make the argument more complex and add overall energy efficiency into the mix. Renewables become even more viable as our demand shrinks.

  • Keep in mind we are dealing with the same administration that is throwing a tantrum over being told to feed starving children in their own country.
