  • We really need to be more sceptical of celebrities, politicians - anybody in a position of influence. I remember thinking Obama and Biden seemed “wholesome”. Obviously, that’s an incredibly naive take, but it’s one that many of us are susceptible to as humans.

We are eager to find “gods”: people we can workship without the friction of scrutiny or criticism. It feels good - even blissful - to adore someone unconditionally. Whatever the mechanic, it would be great if we could identify it - delineate it - so we can recognise it and do the slightly tougher job of restraining our adoration of people in power.

We can still see them as humans and treat them with basic decency, but as long as masses of us fall under the spell of adoration we will continue to live in hell, or visit it on our neighbours.

  • “What a total fucking disgrace the Biden administration’s policy on Gaza was… Loyalty to Netanyahu blinded him to the carnage, the total immorality of the policy, and US complicity …”

Sorry, but that’s a cop out. Nothing “blinded” Biden. He saw it all and was unfazed enough to let it play out, and also lie about seeing photos of things that framed Hamas for atrocities it didn’t commit.

As for the former Obama aides speaking out only now. I think they’re the people referred to in the title of the book One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad.
