  • Sonia Sodha comes to mind. In the last year alone she has written stories for the Guardian that are anti-trans (countless examples), pro-oil and gas, anti-Palestinian, and spreading the fascist myth of Asian grooming gangs.

    I caught one of her TERFy articles and had to check what site I was on. It's a disgrace that The Guardian think this is appropriate.

    It's not unreasonable in theory but the certification process is often inconsistent and who is going to police this? I just can't see it working.

    We just need to wait four years, then we'll have a go at extraditing them. I'm sure a new administration would be happy to get rid of them, but it does mean they'll be straight back to making the Big Web even more toxic.

    It would depend on the contract. The problem is her contract with GMG ends in April and so Tortoise are just not offering her a new one. The issue is this breaks the agreement GMG entered into with the NUJ to end the strike. However, GMG are clearly washing their hands of the matter.

  • Give them a hard Paddington stare, perhaps tut and roll your eyes. That'll teach them. I saw one the other day, gave it both and I think the driver has learned their lesson.

    Perhaps get some flyers to pop under a wiper if you see one parked: "this really isn't on".

    I helped take over the running of feddit.uk after the Admin went AWOL, so the situation is a bit different, but the lessons we learned are largely transferable to your case. So getting it up.ans running should be the easy bit, ensuring it can keep running is where all the planning and hard work comes in.

  • If you have the technical know-how it isn't too bad. Equally, moderation and accepting accounts shouldn't be too much hassle. There are other Admins and devs on Matrix who will lend advice if you need it.

    What you need to do is to invest a bit of time into planning to make the instance sustainable, especially as you are planning on running an instance for your country.

    • Get at least one more Admin onboard, so there is some redundancy.
    • Accept donations - Open Collective is very good for this as you you can use a fiscal host who will hold the money for you. When you hit a critical mass the donations should cover expenses and scale well as your user numbers grow.
    • Plan contingencies for if you are too busy to oversee the site or you don't want to do it any more, don't just drop off the radar.

    I say, go for it and if you need any help then there are a lot of people around who are more than happy to do what they can.
