  • The depth of the stupidity of that is incredible to me.

    You even get invaded by NPCs with "forbidden words" in their names. Checking whether you own game violates your criteria should be sanity check number one.

    And since those people keep their names like that, presumably they can't even tell that their name is being ruined by the game. An extra layer of stupidity.

    At least with stupid chat moderation, you can see your messages, so you know how your messages are being ruined and you can adapt to it.

  • Hah, I had the exact reverse experience. For years when I had a delivery they would come by once (of course not staying nearly long enough to allow me to answer the door) and leave a notice saying the package would be at their warehouse the following day starting at 17:00.

    The warehouse was pretty far. The round trip would take nearly 2 hours by bus. And since they opening hours weren't ideal, if I happened to have a class or be otherwise busy the one night of the week they're open late, well I guess I'd better find a solution, because they'll only keep it for a week.

    I would plead with them. Can you come back? Can you leave it at my door? It's not even worth that much! I'll take the risk! No. At least one thing they did agree to do was keep my package a bit longer once when I realized I had absolutely no way of retrieving it in time. But they only gave me two days.

    It was only when COVID hit that delivery companies started just leaving packages. Sometimes they just wouldn't tell you at all about it, and you'd have a surprise when you'd open the door and hit your foot on a surprise package, if you hadn't kept up with the tracking.

    Some people complained, because they were scared someone would steal their stuff, but I was so glad they were careless. I've worked from home ever since COVID.

    Finally, I can order a thing and actually receive it at home.

  • You know, it's not always, but apple does sell things that are price-competitive with similarly performing competing products.

    Some iterations of the Mac Mini have been hard to beat with a tiny PC with similar performance.

    The M1 MacBooks had some surprisingly cheap options for the relatively premium laptops they were.

    Samsung's Ultra phones tend to cost more or less the same as the Apple Pro Max phones.

    The main difference is sometimes just that Apple doesn't make low-end or low-mid-range, or sometimes not even anything below "relatively high-end", products in a particular category.

  • It's possible. But it's a huge undertaking. If you just wanted to fully understand all of the specifications for HTTP, JavaScript and CSS, it'd take you days before having written a single line of code.

    Then you need to write all that in a performant way.

    Then you need to keep up with all the new features.

    Then you need to keep up with all the new security threats.

    Browsers nowadays are practically little operating systems. So the question is not that far off from asking what prevents you from writing an alternative to Windows.

    You can. But it'll cost millions, or maybe billions, to build something good.

  • I do have a few issues with it:

    • the grippy texture underneath is a bit much. It holds on to grime really well and it's a challenge to clean. I'm not sure we actually needed a grippy texture at all to begin with, but if we did, I wish ease of cleaning had been a bigger concern.
    • the buttons under the controller and L2/R2 buttons are a tad too easy to press by accident.
    • The L2/R2 buttons are not ergonomic enough. I can tell the intent is that I put my indexes on L1/R1 and middle fingers on L2/R2. But it's uncomfortable to do that due to how much the L2/R2 buttons stick out. My hands just aren't that big, and even if they were, I just don't think it's a very natural position to outstretch both fingers like that. It puts too much strain on the ring and little fingers. So instead I only use my indexes for both triggers. Thankfully games rarely need you to do both at once. I wish L2/R2 were lower instead of trying to be flush with L1/R1.
    • I don't play car games, so the gradual triggers are nothing but a negative to me. They reduce my effectiveness when parrying in Elden Ring, for instance. I know most people do care about car games though so I don't know what they could have done about that without worsening reviews...

  • They got paranoid about nuclear and closed down all their nuclear plants. They intensified fossil fuel power production because they didn't have enough renewable power. Then prices went up due to the war end they had an oh shit moment.

  • I bought one for that purpose. Realized it's too much, the angles are so large I can't hold it for long periods without hurting my wrists, and it's really heavy, compounding the wrist pain issue. Also the triggers have way too much resistance.

    Plus the battery life is really short.

    I ended up buying an 8bitdo Ultimate. Much better.

  • CRISPR makes gene editing easier, but unless you've got a way to deliver it to every cell, it won't do much unless you're targeting such a small number of cells that it's realistic to have a technician physically inject it into a cell.

    That would work for an embryo. Ignoring the plethora of ethical issues and the lack of data on long-term effects, it would probably be pretty easy for a scientist to make the change in an embryo and then go through the normal in-vitro fertilization procedure.

    For a whole organism, though, it's more difficult. One obvious solution is a specially modified virus, and that's under research.

  • It's speculation, but from my experience with Accutane I can infer the following possibility:

    • an earwax blockage could get worse because of dry earwax depending on the particular ear

    Also speculation:

    • if there's fewer lipids in sweat, you keep those fats, and potentially you lose less weight.

  • A Climate Town video convinced me natural gas actually manages to be worse.

    Natural gas is methane, and it's extremely hard to handle that without having any leaks, ever. And since methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, it doesn't take that much leaked gas to cross the line into "worse than coal".

    And there are lots of leaks.
