  • I have this idea for a dystopian story where we've figured out aging and can keep people alive forever, but it's only done so that people can continue to work in order to pay off their debts, and only once you've done so are you allowed to die. And the people who administer the anti-aging treatment are also the ones who hold the notes on your debt. I'll get around to writing it one day. I'm sure it'll just be a copy of Running Man or something.

  • If I run for a full hour it's about 800 calories, which gets me like six oreos and a glass of whole milk, which is all I want! Eat well all day, exercise, and snack at night. Just gotta run 8 miles.

  • That sounds exactly what it's like where I live, in the USA!!! Big country, many different laws. I live in New Jersey, which has some of the strictests gun laws in the country, and wouldn't you know it, we also have the least amount of gun violence in the country. Imagine that?

    The US isn't a homogenized wild west, there is a lot of nuance, and I don't like where I live being lumped in with some of the less civilized places.

  • Amen. And I know we all want to just agree with it, but propaganda is propaganda, and when people are painting it to fit the guidelines of communities (like this), it's deceitful and wrong.

  • Ha, I'm out for over a decade at this point, and I'm kind of an "I did my time" Marine. I do have some friends still in, who I'm fairly certain they're still wearing MARPAT digi cammies.

  • Nah, digi cammies weren't gulf war. Dudes wore old deserts in Fallujah, IIRC.

    I did boot in '09, and we qual'd ironsights, and got to SOI in August 2009 and we had ACOGs. I believe boot went ACOGs shortly after that. We also had A2s in boot in '09, and A4s in SOI. Full digi was sometime in 2004, and Fallujah was earlier that year, and so you saw guys in old cammies and digi.

  • Yeah this picture is confusing. I went to boot in '09. We wore deuce gear, but it was green. I can't tell if there are picatinny rails on the rifles or not. There's no ACOGs. I'm definitely leaning toward your timeframe, but something definitely feels off about it. Dunno.

  • Yeah, I don't like the idea that failed ideas are a waste, because that kind of thinking stifles technological advancement.

    I do like thinking that we can have both technological advancement and healthcare.

  • The old arguments were "Look how long they (the socialists) wait to get appointments and get seen!" Yep, we're there now. I have insurance, I still pay a bunch, and seeing specialists is a luxury at this point. If I have an issue, I don't even consider calling specialists, because I know it's weeks til I can get in.

  • You're totally right. A war is the last avenue to take. But you also are here on Lemmy, so you must see the constant calls for US Americans to take up arms against one another, despite the fact that avenues remain.

    Shit sucks here. Shit will suck a lot more if there's a war. And it will suck here and everywhere else. A lot more.

  • I think you raise a good point. There was a time when frugality seemed to stretch a lot further, like trips instead of just surviving. I toned down my drinking and eating out habits about three years ago, and boy am I glad, because I make pretty much the same amount of money. So I live about the same as I used to, without some extravagance that I was already doing away with.

    I just need to choose some more extravagance to get rid of to future-prood myself, like heat in the winter, AC in the summer, and new shoes.

  • I French press for a long time, back when I'd drink four or five cups a day. Believe it or not I ended up with heartburn. I actually took to putting filters (bamboo) in between the screen and the metal spokes to filter my French press, and it actually helped a bit. And apparently French press coffee is super high in cholesterol, and running it through a paper filter can reduce that.

    I do drip now though. And it's fine. I really just drink coffee to wake up in the morning. I put the coffee in, it fills the pot, I pour the pot in my cup and I drink it. They're both easy, and they're certainly easier than some of the silly methods I see nowadays.
