[He/Him]

Software developer by day, insomniac by night. Send me pictures of baby bats to make my day.

  • I've a friend who has nothing but IKEA TRÅDFRI lightbulbs. Each and every one of these has a subtle coil whine, and stepping into his home is like stepping into a rainforest, but unpleasant. He doesn't hear a single peep from them, but to me it's hella grating. The noise changes depending on what light it's emitting, as well as the brightness. The worst is when the light is off.

  • This feels like a nothing burger to me. If people enjoy yoghurt and biscuits then let them have that. Taste is entirely subjective anyway, and if it reminds them of cheese cake then I guess it does. I personally think Dr. Pepper tastes like liquid cheese cake, and no one can stop me from thinking otherwise.

  • Saying "European original" is a bit weird given that Europe is large with plenty of variation even within short distances. Like potato salad is not the same between East/West Germany.

In Sweden, the standard "ostkaka" (lit. cheesecake) refers to the Småland cheesecake which at a glance looks like the burnt basque cheesecake, but is far from the same. What we call "cheesecake" here generally refers to the New York style one.

Hell my go-to recipe for the Småland-style cheesecake doesn't even use dairy. The signature flavour isn't cheese, but bitter almond, and almonds. I substitute cheese for courgettes. It's less decadent but just as delicious.

  • There are no underage prostitutes. They're children being exploited and abused. He's sorry he got caught raping children.

  • I love learning about new companies. That's two in one week. Wow!

  • No, this isn't an accident. It's a PR ploy, and done entirely on purpose. The idea is to push the people who aren't critical towards AI to their side. By being confused and not understanding why people are so mad at these innocent little men just doing their best to bring something good to humanity, they're humanising themselves. Most anyone can relate to fears of having their hard work rejected by others, and they're playing on that.

I wish people would stop platforming this nonsense.

  • Switching is how you get feature parity. Why would anyone contributing to FOSS be all "Oh I think I'll develop this one feature that no one but a few specific big banks want."

Just deal with it for now, and then put whatever money you previously put towards these expensive closed down services to developing what you need in the FOSS space. It's not complicated.

  • What I do is try to support the creators as directly as I can when possible. This obviously doesn't really work with Hollywood productions, but it can work decently well with music and books. I'm hoping it also has the added side-effect of hopefully having more musicians/authors make their stuff available for direct purchase.

  • Almost like they're run by the same fucks. Huh.

  • Same in Europe but I don’t think Mozilla spent the time and effort needed to bring Gecko to iOS. So it’s still just a reskinned WebKit.

  • So I listened to the documentary that was sourced as the origin of the quote. I wrote a comment here.

In essence, it doesn't seem like she regretted punching a nazi per se, but that she feared that it'd cause the life she'd worked so hard to build here to fall apart. I'd imagine that I also wouldn't be very fond of seeing an image my mother hated popping up left and right, and being reminded of what she went through because of it, even if it is as a symbol for a cause I align with.

  • Right so I got to the point in the documentary where they mention it, it's around 36:50 in.

    Off the cuff, rough translation:

What happened with Björn and Danuta after the photograph had been published, and things got out of hand?A complaint was filed against her, and she became a little regretful and worried, that she regretted (the event) because she was afraid she'd catch shit for it. That it'd negatively affect her in some manner. She didn't want to go outside, he said, she kept to herself at home. She probably thought that she was in a foreign country, that this isn't the way you do things here.

The documentary highlights that initially no one knew who she was. There were rumours published in the news about a 54 year old woman making her way to Sweden from Poland just to attend the demonstration. That she'd previously been in a concentration camp.

It also mentions that she herself was just kind of looking for a new start in Sweden. She worked hard to blend in, and wanted to earn the respect of those around her. It mentions her growing up raised by her grandmother, because her own mother lived with trauma from the nazis and couldn't handle it. How she in turn was traumatised, and it was something she struggled with.

It doesn't strike me that she regretted punching a nazi, but more that she wished it hadn't happened because she feared the fallout, particularly given how hard she'd worked to start a new life. I'd imagine she feared all it collapsing around her. Supposedly the police never published her information, and they never got harassed by anyone, but she and her husband did request and were approved for police protection in the event of potential fallout.

  • Thanks for this. Was going through alternatives some months ago and never found this one. All of us have accounts but we didn’t feel comfortable with Microsoft peeping.

It’s like, we bought the game almost two decades ago, I’m hosting the server on my hardware and on my network. Why the fuck does Microsoft need to peep in on that?

  • I’d like to see him out on the ice against them. No, really. Him toddling around, falling, breaking all his bones. I’d love to see that.

  • Yeah I was looking for a transcription because I'm not quite in the mood to sit and listen to a documentary right now, but I might tomorrow.

Edit: that article kind of pisses me off. "We don't get money to make our content accessible."

We all pay taxes for that content, including deaf people. They should have equal access to it.

Granted this could be a right-wingers thing. I think they restricted how detailed SVT can report on things because "state owned media would unfairly compete with private media otherwise." Fucking bollocks.

  • It says that it's from the 2015 documentary. It's linked, but not transcribed. I've not listened to it yet so I can't say either way.

Were it me, I could see myself regretting the general event (händelsen), and the whole thing around it. Don't think I'd regret punching a nazi. They have it coming.

  • I don't put much stock in those opinion polls on account of never having been polled myself, nor do I know anyone that's ever been polled. Like if you poll a thousand people that's bothered to look up these institutes and sign up to be their polling partners or whatever, I don't think that's going to be a very good representation of the entire population.

  • Think that'd work out just fine for him because if a player attempted to retaliate, he has his secret service agents there to gun them down.

  • Yeah, I'm sorry but I don't really see the difference.

  • For what it's worth, I am not trying to trap you in a "gotcha", I'm trying to follow your logic because it doesn't make any sense to me. The division between OK and not OK seems to me completely arbitrary.

If say, a large enough population of people were to deem a certain subgroup of humans as livestock, would it then be ethically correct to artificially inseminate them and slaughter them for their meat?

My knee-jerk reaction is no, but said knee-jerk reaction extends to all animals.

Similarly, I don't see why there's a line drawn between someone artificially inseminating a cow so that you can slaughter and eat the flesh of them and their offspring, and sexually abusing the same cow.

I'm not a vegan. I was born a vegetarian, and haven't ever eaten flesh on purpose. Unlike vegans I don't really see a problem with say, caring for sheep as pets, and using their wool to make yarn.

Yes, which is why it is good that we aren't doing anything abusive by artificially inseminating livestock.

I don't know. If someone viewed me as livestock, and stuck an implement in me and squirted me full of semen, I don't think I'd care that it's ethical in their eyes.
