If a Rep punches a Dem they'll justify it as self defense or something. If a Dem punches a Rep it's "okay to punch a Nazi".

Reps ignoring all of Trump's lies and inability to give a direct answer to a question and a lot of the more fanatical Dems willfully ignoring Biden's obviously declining mental state.
Reps caught up in a cult of personality and Dems willing to vote for anybody that isn't Trump.
It's quite scary to see how easily each side can dehumanise the other while thinking they're correct and morally superior.
The way both sides pardon their own calls to violence can't lead to anything good.
If 'the other' said or did something you consider to be completely heinous and you'd justify it or praise it were the roles reversed then maybe introspection is in order.
Of course violence is sometimes necessary but there seems to be growing bloodthirstiness from the extremes of the Left and the Right and I fear what might happen in November.

No president Left, Right or otherwise would relinquish such power. They'd complain about an opponent gaining it but would see nothing wrong with having it themselves.
I couldn't see any government shying away at a chance to have more power.

You chose well with tung oil, it'll harden unlike beeswax. Pure tung's often my go-to but it just takes so long to properly dry if you're doing multiple coats.
I've got no lathing tips for you because I've only used a lathe once and I'm more of a carver but you've done a great job there for a first attempt!
For the finish I'd recommend smoothing it out with some 240 grit sandpaper, cleaning it off with white spirits or similar then giving it a couple of coats of Danish or boiled linseed oil.
