Stealing and spending cash is theft. Stealing and using a credit card is theft plus fraud. The sketchy guy I bought weed from in high school taught me many life lessons but the most important one is this: don’t break the law unless you have to, but if you do have to, break only one law at a time. Of course, he got arrested, but that itself taught me not to get involved with organized crime and not to sell drugs out of your landlord’s house. Ray was a smart guy.

10·2 days agoStructure and Interpretation of Computer Programs is often called “the wizard book.” Not because Abelson et al believed computers were actually magic but rather because there’s a wizard on the cover and they compare the act of programming to spellcasting, giving instructions to the allegorical beings that live in the hardware. It certainly feels like magic.
The take on the left doesn’t understand reality, and the take in the middle doesn’t understand fun. The take on the right is trying to have fun but is spoken by someone who understands the take in the middle is the literal truth. If the person with the take on the right actually believes computers are magic then they’re actually on the left no matter how much they work with computers.

5·3 days agonot quite. attached is a reference for identifying corn. please reach out if you have any further questions.

The two things that are “worse” are that it uses inside out tracking and WiFi 7 for streaming from a pc instead of using base stations and a tether cable. The displays and optics are both straight upgrades and honestly having used a quest 3 I think the inside out tracking and wireless connection are really important for room scale QOL. I imagine the tradeoffs for ease of setup and portability are probably worth it. You’re probably losing sub millimeter precision and a couple milliseconds of latency at most. The unit also weighs like half as much as the Index, and neck strain is real.

News@lemmy.world•U.S. Pauses Bombing Iran After Officials Warn Trump About Dwindling Munitions Stockpiles
7·3 days agoedit: fair warning I’m not doing great so I’m more prone to doomposting. which this is. anyway:
We Balkanize, the good bits get snatched up by other nation states, and the shit bits get snatched up by private militias. Or, with no conventional munitions left to defend ourselves we start a nuclear war. Or, slim chance here, people vote against this despite Democrats sabotaging the process and then hold them accountable for consistently fucking this up for the last forever, and we reach a kind of degraded equilibrium, american empire declines, chinese empire rises, and MLs tie themselves in knots trying to justify China doing the kinds of things necessary for maintaining a global empire
Oh, and the Enlightenment dies. Like you think its dead now, just wait.
edit again: do not take this comment to be “usa good.” this comment is more along the lines of “geopolitics is a delicate balance of influence distributed amongst several world powers, all of which are bad, and the sudden decline of the biggest player creates a vacuum that is sure to amplify human suffering worldwide”

One of the interchange ramps on my commute home that regularly slows to stop and go due to lane changes. There is an on ramp followed by an off ramp a mile later. They share a lane. Cars entering the freeway, cars exiting the freeway, and cars on the freeway all fight for space. And I live in a relatively affluent area (ornrsther a very stratified area) so lots of people have newer model cars with automatic cruise control that quickly fills gaps and and then hard brakes when people enter the freeway. It’s a shitshow.
Anyway, I’ve learned that by exiting the freeway a mile early, entering downtown, doing a full circle on a round about, and reentering the freeway allows me to skip that mile or so of hostile traffic. I log my mileage and I have found the longer route actually burns less fuel, even.
