  • Tribalism has been with the human race since we've had literal tribes. Not being racist, in comparison, is relatively new.

    Not trying to justify racism but pointing out that the reason why decent people aren't racists is because we learned that basing hatred on intrinsic qualities in a person is stupid and we should cooperate instead of oppress.

    But there are people who just want to oppress.

  • Nations can't ignore the fact that the US has one of the most active militaries in the world. Our Navy is more of less second to none and we have nukes. In the hands of a normal president, we might be fine but you sure as heck know that Trump and his Project 2025 people are just itching to launch one.

    This is a situation where there are no good options. The best you can do is continue political pressure, get other nations to rally behind you in the hopes of creating a strong economic resistance.

    But the real answer is that we, the US citizens, need to fucking take this country back. I hate to say it but protests simply aren't enough anymore.

    Republicans want health care tied to employment so that you are forced to choose between your job and your life.

    If you want a slightly based view on how this system got developed, the Acquired episode on Epic is a great listen.

    The US system of healthcare was invented around the same time as the UK's and we got a choice on how to handle it.

    TL;DL: there was a salary cap on many jobs due to WW2 and companies offered health insurance as a way to make their jobs more attractive. Back then most people didn't have health insurance nor was it needed so this was considered a fringe benefit. Labor unions, frustrated by the lack of political movement on salary cap, fully supported private health insurance.

  • The compromise is to do cash that's earmarked for something. My family will give me an envelope and say "this is for bitcoins" or "reddit gold". And then I tell them "okay..." And then just buy whatever I want.

  • I actually think the expected reality is worse:

    The family will likely settle out of court. MongoDB will admit to no wrongdoing and the settlement will be sealed and there will be an NDA signed by the family, essentially making it impossible for future employees to get the help they need.

    If the family really, really cares about their daughter's legacy, they need to hold out until MongoDB is willing to admit to wrongdoing, even if it means they don't see a penny.
