  • Its been a really cold and wet spring/early summer where I am. We are still hovering below 20 degrees most days. I've never seen such a strong La Nina. It was hell on the garlic but the spring crops are happy.

    The leader of UNITA was not a communist he was a political opportunist who used Marxist rhetoric. (There is a reason China cut off funding and supplies once the liberation war ended and the civil war started.) Savimbi was more than happy to be sponsored by the usa to have a civil war instead of working with the MPLA because he was not interested in setting up a socialist state, he was interested in personal power. His followers were focused on ethnic divisions rather than on class divisions. (this was likely widespread on both sides as the literacy rates were abysmal.)

    Honestly I think the outcomes of the Angolan anti-colonialist revolution were a big part of the formation of China's non-interference policy. If the anti-imperialist struggle hadn't been flooded with money and weapons by USSR and China the struggle for freedom may have been more difficult but it would have possibly made time for the formation of an ideologically sound vanguard party of the working classes which would have avoided the bloodshed during the civil war and the Neo-colonialst recapture.

So the parallels is being drawn between that and the Africans being taken to america. Much of the Jewish identity was formed in the years of exile. Much like how African americans have been shaped by their time in america though they African American exile has been much longer.

  • The best part it that Belgium isn't refusing outright. They are just demanding that the EU agree to pay the damages in any law suits and the EU is saying "we can't take on that risk." So the EU knows it is illegal and would get them sued but they want the Belgians to take the fall.

    I swear when NATO breaks up Europe is going to be a slaughter house as all these petty grievances will have nothing holding them back.

  • Nope. There is no centralized "social credit" system. There are cases where owners of dodgy businesses that owe lots of money or were involved in malfeasance have been cut off from Flights and Trains but those were imposed by a court. They do have regular credit scores but they are nowhere as nebulous or shady as western ones.

    When people bring up the "social credit" thing just ask them if they know their credit rating. Then ask them if they know that just checking their credit rating it can make it worse or that landlords can and often do demand a credit check and employers are allowed to ask for a credit check. Then ask them if being penalized for antisocial behavior sounds bad compared to a automated financial credit system that you aren't even allowed to check without hurting your rating. "everything bad you have heard about China's social credit system is true multiplied by ten in usa but it does not exist in China"
