  • PSA: is the ceiling above your heater low? Check the clearance and make sure the new rod can stand straight up to get into the heater. You can buy segmented rods to avoid this problem.

    Don't ask how I know.

  • I don't even know what you are arguing then.

  • So make the lanes narrower and add speed bumps to slow people down, and also make a passing lane for every speed bump and expect assholes not to use it? Almost as clueless a suggestion as the generic "just redesign every street and intersection in every city to make driving faster impossible!"

Barriers have their place and I don't mind having a narrowing area and speed bumps in front of a school or in a parking lot or whatever. But in a lot of places a camera is a simpler, cheaper, easier, better solution.

And a fire truck or Ambulance is quite capable of going 20-30 above a speed limit in an emergency most times of day and days of the week. I think as a society we take that small increased risk, balancing it with sirens and special driver training, so that people can have help arrive as fast as possible.

  • Hey you are right. A cop would have a stronger, more immediate affect. For the 8 hours they are sitting there. And while they aren't out of their car giving a ticket/letting their buddy or a hot chick off with a warning.

Cameras work. They are there 24/7. They don't discriminate.

Are they a replacement for an officer driving the streets? Nope. How come there wasn't an officer at that construction site or nearby to catch that 10x offender? Is it because it's incredibly difficult and resource intensive to do so?

I got a ticket when they changed the speed limit on a road I traveled daily twice in under a year and then added a camera. So speed change was 60-40, and I got a letter in the mail and a ticket for going 50. I was just going with traffic. I knew there was a new camera but every day day after day, you just start driving with traffic.

Well after that ticket, I stopped being lazy and started actually driving. And over the next month or so I could see who had gotten a ticket and who hadn't yet. And slowly traffic shifted down to the point where I was going with the flow of traffic again, enough people had either got a ticket or had got used to driving behind someone who had that everyone chilled out and started observing the limit.

That's how these cameras work. A cop could be parked there for years and not have that affect, and also a cop couldn't park there and wouldn't have anywhere to pull someone over without creating major traffic problems.

  • Why? Why should I have to drive over speed bumps when I am happy going the limit? A camera doesn't affect me, narrow lanes and speedbumps suck and make driving less pleasant. What happens when a fire truck or ambulance is trying to get to an emergency?

  • I'm clearly ootl here, but without know who anyone is or what horrible murder or mass shooting it's referencing I'd say this meme is saying "WHY THE FUCK IS A JUDGE ALSO RUNNING AN INSTITUTION THAT EARNS THEM MONEY IF THEY RULE CERTAIN WAYS?"

That's what's going through my head anywho.

  • Is it urine? Sometimes it's that....

  • Maybe we shouldn't be talking about this right after it happened??!?! Give the dead child's family some time! Now is not the time for gun control arguments it's the time to come together and support the victims, especially the man who shot the child, nobody thinks of their suffering!

  • Fact: your a waste of time. Fact check me bro.

    I don't play stupid games.

  • Don't need your bullshit here, thanks.

  • Just know that for every unhinged Stockholm syndrome affirming propaganda peice out there, there people like you and me who see right through it. Take care of yourself. Don't be gaslite.

  • How depressing. "My country is falling apart and my family is part of the ignorant, selfish problem, but I found hope in just ignoring that and tiptoeing arounds the problem in the hopes that mom will just die and then I can pretend she never was that bad?"

Am I reading that right? Was this supposed to be inspiring? How can you waste your time writing an opinion piece to defend your shitty parents, when clearly they should know the work you do better than most? Is it just because this is The Guardian?

  • I didn't disagree with your "allocation" nor did I accuse you of antisemitism nor did I "connect Israel with all Jews", perhaps your reading comprehension is worse than you would like to think. Explaining subtext as to why something would be perceived as a thing doesn't make you that thing.

Let me put it this way: is it antisemitic to forget that the Jewish victim exists when discussing Nazis stealing art ? If not, does it SEEM like antisemitism if YOU then start talking about taking that money/painting that was stolen and rightfully belongs to some Jewish family somewhere, and giving it to Palestine?

    Your comment made the connection.

  • Oh damn. You nailed it. I'm on connect. I'll try and delete the second post.

  • Oh my no, it's much more insidious than that. They move into small towns and undercut all the smaller local stores, eventually forcing them to close, then they are the only game in town and people can't afford to drive to the next town over.

Edit: there is a Wendover Productions video on youtube that gets into it in the second half.

  • The funds, or painting itself, should be returned to the families it was stolen from. That family was very likely Jewish. So you saying "give it to Palestine!" implies taking from Jewish people, which would be unfair, but in this context also implies they "owe" it because Israel is to blame, and Jews=Israel.

I do see your connection now that you have explained it though, I wonder if maybe you just stumbled and missed the very negative subtext within your suggestion.

  • Well now you are armed with that info for next time. I too have trouble standing up to misinformation. It's a problem where I won't just spout things I haven't verified and can source, no matter how true I THINK it is. It's baffling how others can just howl into the nothing about things they heard somewhere and are positive it's true.

Last time I was sure of a point during one of those sorts of discussions it was amazing to see the deflation in the room. "What do you mean?"

I mean you guys are idiots, here's where you can verify that. I didn't say that because neither of them seem that far gone, they are the helpful idiots. And suddenly the whining about being a victim of a non existent problem quieted down.

  • Citations needed. And don't start talking about red light cameras, I am discussing speed cameras. I don't like red light cameras for all your reasons listed.

I too love winding highway roads. They never seem to be where these cameras are.
