  • We’re actually doing pretty good right now, drought wise! Over 80% of California isn’t considered in a drought, and what is in a drought is at the lowest level (D0, abnormally dry).

So, theoretically, this year shouldn’t be particularly terrifying during the Santa Anas.

  • Oh damn, that’s really interesting about the squash leaves and raccoons. Those leaves for sure have an unpleasant texture, and raccoons are supposed to have particularly sensitive paws, so that makes sense. That’s really ingenious.

I’ve seen trails of paw prints and drag marks leading out of corn fields, where a raccoon has taken down an entire stalk and dragged it away with all the corn on it! A lot of work if you’re raccoon sized, but surprisingly smart.

  • Imagine how dire things would be if it was only an A++!

  • A shit ton of countries got involved in the war (“coalition of the willing”):

Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Palau, Panama, the Philippines, Portugal, Romania, Rwanda, Singapore, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Tonga, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

Those were all more minor players, with these as the major:

Australia: 2,000 invasion, Poland: 200 invasion—2,500 peak, Spain: 1,300 invasion, United Kingdom: 46,000 invasion, United States: 150,000 to 250,000 invasion.

  • TIL. I thought they were just related in the way cabbage and broccoli are related, not that summer squash is literally just an immature gourd. Dunno how this knowledge escaped me when I ate a stupid amount of summer squash as a kid.

  • God, it would be great if this led to actual consequences

  • I’ve seen roaches, which was gross, but never any bedbugs thank Christ.

  • I had a family member make a decorative dough version of this one year in the 90s, when making decorations out of salt dough was all the rage.

  • It was pumpkins? I have always been taught squash. Or is this a calabaza = squash and pumpkin translation issue maybe?

  • This meme is absolutely correct, which is why it makes me so happy that that California is making real strides in repatriating looted ancestor graves and cultural items with CalNAGPRA. Thousands have been returned to tribes, sometimes to be cared for locally, sometimes reburied, and sometimes the tribe maintains ownership but allows the university/museum to display it. Ie, the same fucking rights they should have had from the beginning. It’s about half a century late, but at least it’s finally getting underway.

  • At this point journalists should just treat everything he accuses other people of doing as a tip to look into it in Trump’s past.

  • For me personally, I consider this a side effect of being raised by a fundamentalist Christian sect. Turns out you internalize it when a ton of authority figures in your life tell you that you’re fundamentally evil and deserve to burn in hell! (This had nothing to do with me personally, all congregants heard it)

  • Imagine going outside for a smoke and the crows just start circling. Frantically puffing and fighting them off with your spare hand.

  • I refuse! I REFUSE!!

  • And then it just keeps driving with a corpse in it 😬

  • I’ve got a lot of anti-Trump thoughts, how much are they paying for them?

  • Really doubt it 😌

  • See also: internet men any time someone uses the phrase “toxic masculinity.” I don’t think I’ve seen it come up a single time without dudes getting Big Mad (and ironically listing a bunch of shit that shows how terrible toxic masculinity is for men with zero self awareness)
