  • I am on Linux but haven’t needed to use office software in nearly 20 years, how do you access the pdf printer? Is that different from saving as a pdf through the menu?

  • Good to know, at the time my brain was absolutely fried so it doesn’t surprise me that I missed it, lol

  • I used LibreOffice Writer for my coursework the past semester, and when I used my spouse’s Windows computer to double check the images were correctly placed before submitting a paper they were on completely different pages. This was when I saved it as a .docx, because the only two options accepted were .docx or pdf. I wound up doing everything as a pdf if I needed images, but I think LibreOffice doesn’t have a save as pdf option? Or if it did I missed it, I just used Google Docs to save it as a pdf.

  • Maybe through convergent evolution the pagan solstice celebrations just turned into Christmas. Yay, pagan Whos!

  • “I think [giving the bot access to all channels] was pretty clearly explained above as honoring the vote,” he said. “Just because you hate AI is not a reason to take the least charitable interpretation of the outcome: we made changes as a result of the vote. We have to optimize for the preference of everyone which means that the mob doesn’t get to rule, I’m sorry.”

Wtf does this even mean. How can you honor the results of a poll and the preferences of everyone by doing the exact opposite of said preferences?? Gird your fucking loins and say you’re doing it because it’s your server and that’s how you want it, or accept that the thing you want isn’t actually popular.

What is it with AI pushers and their complete inability to keep it to themselves, Christ. Unless it’s done something fucked up, nobody is interested in seeing your AI chats. If people wanted to talk to ChatClaudeGeminiCopilotGPT they’d do it on their own time.

  • This is some absolute horse shit some exec has dreamed up to explain why their “AI” product is so slow it might take minutes to respond to you, lmao

  • My computer wasn't compatible with Windows 11, and it's not that old, dammit. The thought of throwing it out because of some arbitrary push for Windows 11 from Microsoft made me angry, so I finally installed Mint since it's the one I kept hearing is easiest for people who don't know anything about Linux. I've been using it almost 3 months now and I don't find it difficult to deal with at all, and the games I play work on it. The biggest hurdle has been compatibility with some school stuff, but I've been able to use LibreOffice and Google Docs when all else fails.

Computers aren't my hobby, running into errors when I just want to get shit done pisses me off. I've been dealing with a minimal amount of that on Mint, I imagine mostly because I'm not tinkering with a ton under the hood (mostly aesthetic changes so that it looks how I like). If you have basic troubleshooting skills for Windows then a lot of that transfers to Linux, even though the actual solutions will be different.

If something better than Mint came along I'd probably switch to it, but I don't know what that would look like, since Mint is doing exactly what I want: running my programs and not popping up with a ton of useless AI crap or ads.

  • If you’re not joking, reach out to your college’s academic support/tutoring centers. They’re literally paid to be there and help you with your classes. Even if you understand all the class content already they can still help you with whatever you’re struggling with, like figuring out how much time a project needs or how to get it started/organized.

I struggled my first go ‘round in college 20 years ago and wish I’d known that, now that I’m going back I’ve been using the support systems the college has a lot more and it’s been paying off.

  • I wonder if it was inspired by the columnar jointing formations you can find in Iceland?

  • It made me laugh when it was in response to someone getting mad at me after arguing, but occasionally I’d make a highly upvoted comment that was related to being trans or gay and then get them, and that pissed me off. It’s not possible to prove that’s what happened without access to server logs of course, but I for sure wasn’t talking about being depressed or suicidal or anything like that on Reddit, and it was suspicious at minimum.

  • Putting on an audiobook or podcast almost always does it for me. Which is kind of annoying when I want to stay awake and listen to it!

  • I always knew I had won an argument when they stopped replying and I got the Reddit cares message. If the ‘report abuse’ link that was in those messages ever led to consequences I never saw it.

  • Me, skipping the mullet phase because I grew up in the 90s when everyone had rat tails and mullets: 😎

Just don’t ask about how much gel I used in my hair when I first transitioned…

  • I think red-capped would be a good name too! In general I’m a fan of birds having as many common names as makes sense, haha

  • There also seems to be a distinct lack of meaning for life for the wealthy. Any changes they could effect with their money means they wouldn’t have the money anymore, so they stop caring about any problems their money could fix (which is a lot of them). Ultimately leading to complete callousness over human suffering.

  • Red-bellied is completely accurate, you just normally don’t see the belly:

    Red-headed was already taken:

  • Does looking at this make anyone else start wheezing?

  • Maybe neither are wrong, and as a society we also subject children to physically dangerous sports that can cause lifelong injuries. Both suck, and not being able to do something because of illness or hardship is painful to accept.

It’s also indicative of problems in the ways it’s acceptable to teach and raise children: their self worth as humans shouldn’t be predicated on how well they perform, they shouldn’t be subjected to intense pressure to achieve academically and/or athletically, and the illnesses/injuries they encountered as a result of these pressures should have been treated preventatively instead of reactively.
