  • Sure. But they would obviously like to push for this. Whether it has a chance in hell is another thing. If they can show open stability for a decade or two while the US circles the toilet, it could happen.

  • It did seem rather ill advised to try to compete with a ruptured acl.

  • That's nothing. Take a mouthful of instant coffee and wash it down with a gulp of milk.

  • Another country votes to 'improve security' by reducing social support for the poor. Yeah, threaten more prison time for those stealing to survive, that'll help.

  • Public money of one jurisdiction shouldn't necessarily pay for things so a different jurisdiction gets them for free. It's an opportunity for the city to generate some revenue to offset other costs. Or it could be structured as a non-profit effort to develop open source, paid by ongoing grants from a number of cities that would use it - that would be nice, but difficult to orchestrate .

  • A lot of Cubans in the US despise the Cuban fascist regime. But interestingly, now the US is going down the same path.

  • And specifically space stuff that isn't aligned with the fascist assholes to the south.

  • It refers to genociding the Jews to get back the area. Technically it doesn't, like saying 'all lives matter' isn't technically anti-black, but it is. Wearing a swastika might mean you support the Hindu notion of well-being, but it doesn't.Symbols have meaning and hiding behind technicalities allows dog whistling and regressive behavior.Yes, Israel is abhorrent in its actions in Gaza, and a form of shared peaceful cohabitation in the area would be ideal. But allowing slogans that are known to represent genocide, doesn't help.

  • What's the point of having the 2nd amendment if it leads to kids being killed, but it's not used to stop the fascists taking over the country?

  • A lot of apartments are just converted houses, or old with minimal such standards except basic structural. So the floor joists would typically be 2x10 (nominal inch). Possibly a neighbor below tried to install the pole and found only drywall ceiling and cut a hole. Instead of boxing between the joists and attaching to that, they just went higher to the next flat wood - the subfloor ply under the flooring - so possibly just 3/4".

  • AI vegan. That's brilliant.

  • Social media is a terrible for us. Me included. It's addictive - that's why I'm here. It's even worse for kids as it fucks up their social skills development. And we have the power to help them avoid it, just like we were lucky enough to grow up before it. Once they're old enough they can then choose to fuck them selves up, like they can with alcohol, weed, porn, etc.

  • The fuck can we do about it? The morons have taken over and are killing their own kids. All there is left to do about it is laugh.

  • Sorry, my bad - wrong thread.

But if it's not physical - what else could it be? Are you implying some magic that follows no laws and isn't based on anything that can be measured or modeled?

  • So what's the point of saying AI can't be conscious? That's where we started here. It's a stupid argument that's clearly wrong.

  • Yeah thanks, you can keep that naval gazing. Consciousness can never be the subject of science since it cannot be measured. It's all conjecture and metaphysics. I don't see the point of trying to classify it, since one can never test a theory. The argument that consciousness isn't based on the physicality of the brain is silly. When you attribute consciousness to magic, if magic is real, then magic is a part of physics - it's just physics that isn't understood. We cannot know if something is or isn't conscious. So we cannot know if AI is or can be conscious. Any argument that it definitely isn't or can't be conscious is therefore wrong.

  • Seriously? You want to argue that? You can actually admit your argument is lost, ya know.

  • The failure was of Americans to not stop trump. The democrats wouldn't be as bad a the republicans, so it was pure dumbfuckery to not vote for them. Why didn't Kamala appeal to every one of your wants? Sure it's part because of donors; but also because any issue has potential voters on both sides. There was no selection of issue stances that would have garnered enough votes if people only voted if they agreed with all of them. And clearly enough Americans were (and apparently still are) unable to see the logic of voting for the better candidate even if not perfect.

  • They didn't do surveys like that back when they didn't have soap, so we can never know. But I think healthier longevity is pretty clearly a plus. But you do you - you can refuse heath care if you think it will make you happier.
