To mislabel it ‘useless’ is to ignore its more nefarious purposes as it relates specifically to Ukraine.

The Iran war:

• takes attention away from the horrors being committed daily against innocent Ukrainians civilians (amongst other things),
• gives the US an excuse to withdraw previous commitments and refuse further military aid to Ukraine (we need our stocks now sorry, not sorry),
• reduces US domestic support for Ukraine (the most gullible will believe the claim ‘Ukraine is causing your inflation’, not the imbecile they voted in)

The backlash

It’s not so much ‘trust’ as ‘acceptance’ that they are the best source available keeping realtime track of, and reporting, what they are doing. The MOD reports are understood to be the upper bound of what actually happened, not the gospel truth. Nobody will have even remotely accurate numbers until years after russia has withdrawn and the war is over, Fog of War being what it is.

Until then, saying “I don’t trust these numbers” is noise. We work within the limitations of what is available. As such, the trend of an increase in reported numbers is itself a noteworthy change and supports the articles message regardless of whether it is only 75 or actually 77.

Could you be more specific with the data you take issue with? The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense has provided the destruction tally, which is good enough for our purposes here.

Do you think air defense technology is easily replaceable by a country that can barely produce 90nm chips (current is down to ~3nm)?

I am the first person to expect relatively good quality reporting/sources, but I don’t see any issues with the statements made in the article.

This. The fire departments in my country measure the danger zone for tanker truck explosions in kilometers. Not even weapons grade explosives.

There are numerous videos of people idly watching a fire hundreds of meters away (burning truck, or factory) and then the crowd panics when half a truck lands next to them.

Drones aren’t CAS. Not the way this article uses the term anyways. They are talking about destroying large groups of enemies. Drones can’t do that. They do small pockets of enemy. Again, it is the opposite of what the article describes. Not an analogue.

To be frank: I don’t see the analogue. To use the methods employed in that article requires air supremacy, not just air superiority. That is a luxury Ukraine will never have. Why? russian aircraft will always have the technological advantage even if they refuse to use it, the dramatic increase in the efficacy and prevalence of MANPADS means, unlike what most say regarding Tank usefullness, the era of CAS is all but over, and finally, Ukraine simply does not have even close to the overwhelming amount of air forces the NATO coalition brought to bear.

As russia’s air defense attrition reaches critical levels I do expect to see a dramatic increase in Ukraine’s use and effectiveness of Air assaults on ground forces, but I will eat my hat the day a yellow and blue F16 flies over Moscow, let alone carpet bombing of russian trench lines.

I think the confusion is that the techniques employed are to tire the missile out, not dodge them. It is possible to dodge in some cases, but, this is due to limitations in missile’s radar (and/or energy) far more than the fighter outmaneuvering something that can do 20g turns at mach 7. Thus, the maneuverability metric that originally brought on this entire conversation is not nearly as beneficial as described as they don’t need to turn on a dime, just in the right direction at the right time.
