  • unless you’re branding your posts here with your real name and trying to monetize it, you’re not really using social media in the way most folks mean it in 2026.

social media is when it’s tied to your real life identity and your body, it’s not anonymous posting on forums or message boards, which lemmy is more in the vein of.

I don’t think anyone would regard my posts on forums and old.reddit.com as social media. if i had used reddit as a promotional tool for like my instagram business or as part of a personal brand I’m proving, yeah that would be very different.

IME real social media people are those who have basically internalized the concept of self branding and see their lives as entirely performative for their audience, whether that be internet strangers or their real life friend group.

  • I’ve told people that I hated my father since I was like toddler. Nobody ever believed me. They just lecture me that I don’t really mean that.

Not really a secret I guess, but it’s just something that people refuse to believe because I guess it goes against their ‘family is always love’ nonsense.

Also I did a lot of vandalism when I was a pre-teen. not really a secret either, but folks who find this out about me get really offended and upset, i think because they think I’m some uptight straight-laced person, mostly because I don’t drink or do drugs for awhile now. I did do a lot of booze and drugs from 16-20 though.

  • just because you personally don’t see it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

log out and browse an all feed and click in a couple a couple of pages from the top, and you will see a lot of crazy shit.

if you only see what you subscribe to, yeah you won’t see any weird and crazy shit on here. hell, go into any news community on .ml and 90% of the comments are ‘death to america!’ kind of shit.

  • i remember when reddit mods didn’t ban you for having different opinions than them, but that was 15 years ago.

hell, some of the places i was on reddit the mods would defend people’s rights to have differing opinions and thoughts and beliefs. but that starting changing in the mid 2010s with the influxed of ID politics nutjobs who started becoming mods or harassing older mods into compliance with their insane beliefs that people are inherently evil or good based on their politics or their physical characteristics.

the irony always being that ID pol people scream they are the proponents of ‘empathy’ but their ideology doesn’t believe it can genuinely exist between people of different identities.

  • beaus some people such intense idealists and they don’t think biology should exist because they find it political or socially upsetting.

like for them, the concept of saying males produce sperm and females eggs, is offense and harmful and evil. so it shouldn’t exist and we should stop saying that, because intersex and sterile people exist and they are ‘excluded’ from our evil biological sex language.

  • Intersex people don’t exist in statistically relevant numbers.

Siamese twins also exist, and there are lots of legal issues with them as well as to whether they count as one or two people. Oftentimes they are considered both or neither depending on the specific legal issue that comes up.

But we don’t base governmental policy on the existence of Siamese twins, we base it on the concept of singular individuals.

  • Yes, but poliitcally it’s convenient to argue that gender is oppressive, or essential or something.

What’s ironic to me is the ‘anti gender’ people are the one who are the most obsessed with it and go around policing every else’s gender identity and their language use about it.

Like, if you want to be liberated from gender, why don’t you liberate yourself first, and stop agonizing about other people’s gender identity or lack thereof. Nobody informs/lectures me of my own gender identity more than people who claim to not believe gender exists…

People assume I’m a woman unless I disclose I’m a man anyway, which is also hilarious to me. Because I ‘type like a girl’, and then when they find out my gender they go back and the meaning of all my words suddenly becomes offensive and awful… which just reveals their own inherent gender biases.

  • Because the concept that biological sex doesn’t exist keeps getting pushed by folks, and it’s simple not true apart from fringe circumstances.

despite 99.1% of the population not being trans, and 99.998% of it not being hermaphrodites.

it’s a totally insane position and I’m sick of it being normalized. But then again this place is full of people who think China will liberate them from their oppression by capitalism, but they are also incorrect and not living in reality.

Way too many folks seem to want to take the perspective of schziophrenic and argue we should all be like that, rather than we should treat the schiophrenic so they don’t suffer from schziophrenia. And will scream at you that you’re evil and wrong for not wanting everyone to become schiophrenic.

What’s weird is IRL, I have never me trans person who argues everyone needs to be trans or gender/sex needs to be abolished to ‘liberate’ us from it or something. And when I do meet someone like that, it’s mostly a rich white straight person who argues that, who is sexist as hell about other people’s genders. It’s largely a projection of their own shame at their own gender essentalism, or something. Otherwise it’s a position that mostly a position of delusional people online, and it’s utterly bizarre. And equally as absurd as the people who think trans people are going around converting children or something.

  • I’ve been here for over three years. I left reddit in like '22, before it was cool to leave reddit.

it was a lot more chill a year or two ago, the reddit refugees who have come here recent have brought a lot of their toxicity and intolerance with them, and a lot of them have started a lot of communities where, like reddit today, the easiest way to get banned is disagreement with a moderator/admins personal opinions.

the easiest way to not have a terrible time here is to block incessently, and block entire instances where you can. i have about 5 instances blocked, and 100s of users blocked. it cuts down my content by like 70% probably, but I’m not interested in kind of content those communities/users post incessantly, which is mostly inflammatory rage bait and victimhood self-pity nonsense. and the personal harassment I get is fairly limited compared to when I dind’t block .ml and a few other instances that are basically ideologically extremist.
