  • As far as convincing normies I've had limited success (still working on it) getting them to use Delta Chat, just due to the easy onboarding, just pick a name and go, no password even. Got a few on it including my mom who cannot computer to save her life.

    So far the holdouts are a few people of the "I don't want to download a free app, you should spend a fucking grand on an iPhone so we can use iMessage" opinion (literally), and, idk I'm working on it but for people that out of touch and stupid there may be no hope except to be mercifully euthanized.

  • What's more, even if you self host, unless you only allow chats within your instance, your server pisses metadata to any server it federates with, and as the "default" instance is matrix [.] org you basically have to federate with them.

    Even if it isn't backdoored through the app (which afaik has never been audited) or server (which afaik also hasn't), or the protocol (which afaik has, but me no trust), if they're spying on the metadata that alone is an issue, and they absolutely could do that.

  • It's actually because that claim is flat out false. People sell drugs on Snapchat for starters, back in the day it started on IRC (afaik) if you knew the right spots, Silk Road is closed (and all those using the name since are scams) and I think WHM (last I knew) exit scammed, but someone took up the job (idk who, check Dread.)

    There's a reason some (not nearly all, not even most) illegal operations run on Telegram and not Signal, and it has absolutely dick to do with security.

  • 3 guys 1 hammer is a video of some kids killing a guy, but there's no plot so I don't think it counts as a "snuff film," and by "homemade snuff films" do you mean they have a plot and some production value, lighting, scripting, and someone dies, or do you mean "murder that was filmed?" Because that's kinda my point I don't know if it counts without a plot.

    See from this description I don't count that as a "snuff film," and I'm questioning if it counts, because of course "filmed death" isn't a myth, there's countless examples. A quick search defines "snuff films" as:

    A film that shows, or purports to show, the actual deliberate killing of one of the performers.

    So that seems to suggest that I'm right.

  • Wait I thought to be a true "snuff film" it had to be like an actual scripted narrative film with like "filmmakers" wherein someone is murdered on screen for real, not just home murder movies, am I wrong? If any recorded murder counts then of course there's snuff films, 3 guys 1 hammer comes to mind, BTK, etc, but I thought it had to be like a proper movie.

    If I'm right then this is more of a home movie/blackmail material situation, I don't think they have like a secret Woody Allen film (though nothing is impossible, he's in the files, they could.)

  • Tbf, if someone started shouting "la migra" at me with a camera in my face, I might cover mine too despite not even working for the government at all. As much as everyone seems to want to become a meme these days I'd prefer not to, personally, and going viral over (what would in my personal case be) a false accusation while attempting to grocery shop isn't on my to do list today either.

    I mean I'm not in a charger and I don't really look the part so in my case such an accusation is unlikely, and for sure 50/50 chance here just based on the charger lol, but the other 50% of that is still just "some dude who thinks chargers are cool," and that's just poor taste in cars. Though yeah not being worried about that assault charge is also a point towards "probably" in this one.

    • I don't need my ISP knowing everything I do regardless of legality.
    • I don't need dickhead network admins knowing everything I do on their network, regardless of legality.
    • I don't need every website knowing my identity regardless of legality.

And they're constantly sneaking in my house so I should have by now I think.

I know I know I agree it should be Going To Pasalacqua but I'm apparently the only person on earth who prefers 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours to, well, everything they did after that (Dookie and Kerplunk were great too, in that order, but after that it's one or two good songs at best per album. Like to the degree I think I like Foxboro Hot Tubs and The Network better than "Green Day" proper post-Dookie). But of course they played that and not Disappearing Boy.
