  • Were these records unofficially leaked to ProPublica? That seems to be the implication.

  • It doesn't seem comically evil to me, unless you think that every state that doesn't have a tax exemption for solar panels is being comically evil.

  • What's funny about this?

  • Ewww she turned into a human.

  • I used to know a pathologist who would get called in on her days off to do autopsies sometimes. She didn't laugh at my jokes about patients who really ought to lie down, chill, and wait until Monday.

  • Standard or narrow gauge wheelchair?

  • I think the OP is entitled to be more upset than he is - I presume his wife didn't intend to hurt him, but the fact of the matter is that she did, and IMO marrying him while being wrong about whether or not she was actually sexually attracted to him was real wrongdoing on her part even though it wasn't deliberate.

  • It's just a bunch of "tacticool" accessories, not anything rare or particularly high-tech. IMO it makes the agents look like try-hard dorks - no number of laser scopes is going to turn them into commandos.

(With that said, the house does say "We don't dial 911" and so it makes sense for the agents to be particularly careful.)

  • During the first winter after I got my dog, it took me a few days to notice that the reason he wasn't asking to go outside as much in the snow was because he was sneaking into the unused bedroom and pooping there.

(Oddly, he had still only peed outside. I guess that's where he drew the line himself.)

  • Idealists are letting perfect be the enemy of the good but I don't think that's why Democrats underperformed. Neither Clinton nor Biden/Harris were idealists of this sort (despite some stuff Harris said but didn't mean back in the 2020 primaries) and they didn't lose elections because of a lack of support from the idealists. So IMO while the idealists aren't helping, the very much non-idealistic institutions of the Democratic party which prioritize seniority within the party over electability are to blame.

  • I didn't think a newborn bear could really be that small, but apparently bears are actually born extremely tiny relative to their adult size, with a newborn polar bear weighing only about one pound!

  • The statistics clearly show that poorer people have more children than richer people, so does having material comfort cause despair or are many people confused about their own motivations?

  • That's not the right way to interpret these polls. Many people aren't answering the question literally. They're interpreting it to mean "Do you still approve of Trump's deportation policy, despite everything?" and they're saying yes to that. (It's a reasonable interpretation.) People who really are happy about the killing do exist and they're disproportionately loud online but they're not 28% of the population.

  • I still can't get over the fact that there's just no way to prevent Windows 11 home edition from ever rebooting automatically.

  • I used to work at a company involved in breast cancer screening, and one of the skills I learned on that job was how to say the word "breast" without ever giggling. It was a small startup so we had some interesting people, including a woman who, when discussing how the machine worked, would just grab one of her own breasts through her shirt and start poking it.

  • It's part of a pattern. Something about HH seems to appeal to them...

  • The moral calculus favors China's rise as long as China doesn't start any major wars, but the danger of China invading Taiwan is so great that I would have favored a policy of economic containment in order to reduce China's capability to wage war even if it also reduced China's economic growth.

Even if you disagree, do you acknowledge that, contrary to the claim in the OP, middle-class prosperity has not led to middle-class self-determination in China?

  • Has that ever worked? China has not liberalized even after trade with the West made it rich, and neither had Russia (before the sanctions related to the war in Ukraine.
