Acklavidian@lemmy.worldto ADHD@lemmy.world•How common is it to need to know the absolute inner workings of something in order to do it?English2·2 months agoI can certainly relate. I remember disassembling mechanical things as a young kid and it always bugged me that there was this digital level of design that I couldn’t physically investigate intuitively. Then once I started programming I remembered initially being disappointed by the concept of scripting/dynamic language. It felt like if I tried to imagine the twinkle of the 1s and 0s as they moved around the machine the patterns would more divorced from the physical hardware. Probably not an accurate or valid abstraction but it is the model that I mentally interact with at a high concept level. I’ve grown more partial to dynamic languages since then but only as I’ve come to terms with the underlying mechanisms. ADHD needs solid walls to bounce off of and having a interpreter that exists in this virtual environment doesn’t naturally capture my trust. So in my hubris I doubt the veracity of the tools and learn that it requires a context change to dig in to the lower level of the issue which is demoralizing as an ADHD person. And now because I want to mitigate future context change I spend a lot of time forecasting potential context changes and quickly get overwhelmed by my own efforts.

Neat except ice doesn’t sink. I’m sure there are all manner of inaccuracy in those movies but that one really stuck with me.

Acklavidian@lemmy.worldto Videos@lemmy.world•Can I get feedback on a video I made for a video game no one plays?2·1 year agoI got a little over halfway. I feel like most of the critique you are going to get will be skewed by the issue of your voice not being very clear. Seems like the mid tones get really muddy and requires me to focus on trying to figure out what words are being said rather than what is being communicated or even what’s on screen.

Its a warning about/prediction of the rise right wing media, and the glorification and commodification of inflammatory content.

Albeit many browsers allow you to disable JavaScript these days, it’s not a great experience. I will say that it’s hard to monetize these types of profiles because they are somewhat ephemeral and not always accurate. But they are good enough to use to increase engagement on a admin dashboard so that’s what happens. Also there is some considerations to be made in terms of how similar people could potentially buy similar devices and use them in similar ways producing similar profiles. Decisions are made by analysing engagement metrics without any awareness of the behavior that drives them. I think this is what might have led to what Google is pushing as the new model for tracking users instead of cookies. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federated_Learning_of_Cohorts
Acklavidian@lemmy.worldto Videos@lemmy.world•Am I the only one whose "shorts" feed is all basically softcore porn?1·1 year agoThey are tracking you even in incognito with a VPN and even across services. People have been using these types of tools for a very long time and porn sites have been tracking people all the while. Basically your devices have enough unique attributes accessible through JavaScript API like make model, screen resolution, bluetooth radio capabilities like ble, connection speed, etc. Basically brute force every data point available in the API and use the results to build a profile to recognize you. Tools like https://modernizr.com/ while not exactly intended for this still make it easier.
It reminds me of how musical artists would let people vote on their next venue, and 4chan would find ways to make it a school for the deaf, or the inception of Boaty McBoatface.
