  • Yeah that's a really weird concept. In Serbia you just get mail some time before elections that tell you where to go to vote, and you either go there where they have your name already and you just show them your ID, or you don't go and then you didn't vote.

  • One of the main things that made me start was the prevalence of it on lemmy. Fast forward and I'm half-way through Voyager. You should totally give it a try, every series so far has been amazing in its own way!

  • Having multiple files increases the compile time, think of all the femtoseconds you can save by having everything in one place!

  • From Serbia, I have a supermarket about 200m from my apartment and a mall with a huge supermarket about 20 mins away on foot. In my city at least, you're rarely more than 15 mins away by foot from a supermarket, they're everywhere.

  • Translation tools (like DeepL and Google Translate), proof assistance for mathematicians, camera settings optimisations, data analysis assistance in pretty much any field of research, anomaly detection, compression algorithms, ADAS systems like following a lane or self-parking, I can't remember the specifics, but I know Nokia uses ML/AI methods for signal transmision/receiving optimisation, noise removal, image recognition for various purposes, I recall a system for automatic tree pruning, etc etc.

And before I get the usual "only GenAI is AI", the underlying methods for creating a generative model and something like a model that detects street signs or abnormalities in medical scans are based on the same principles, they are the same field of computer science.

  • It certainly is out and about

  • When I started out, I used to change distros like socks lol While you do have to reinstall programs, having a separate /home partition means that you can keep your stuff between changes

  • Bombs were falling on civilian targets nowhere near Kosovo. Various bridges, schools, hospitals, a chemical plant in Pančevo that almost destroyed the entire city, the Chinese embassy, a bomb fragment fell literally in my family's garden. Hundreds of civilians died, my grandma almost impaled on a table from a bomb shockwave and the glass shattered onto the cradle I was in (I was 1 year old at the time), but luckily my mom placed protection around me just in case. This was on the far north of Serbia.

To be clear, OP is a tankie who shouldn't be given any attention or a platform (I checkes their post history), but the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999 was a campaign that caused untold suffering to countless civilians (be it in injuries, deaths, or just going through every day not knowing whether you and your loved ones will be alive tomorrow) that had absolutely nothing to do with Kosovo, something that left scars in society that are still felt. It was not simply "disturbing a genocide". Not to mention that it was an attack launched without the approval of the UN.

  • There are a lot of disturbing videos available on reddit. The police chasing and beating the living hell out of people on the ground, the director of the police claiming on national television that the protesters didn't allow an ambulance to pass, even though there is a video showing the ambulance passing through the crowd of protestors only to be stopped by the police, who then used the situation to commence a surprise charge at the protesters. And all this because we want... check this... elections. Something our overlord used to hold every 2 years, but now he's scared.

  • In Yugoslavia it was actually quite the opposite. Old commie blocks in Serbia all have big green spaces around them and playgrounds, while new buildings are all built on top of each other with no room to breathe and no greenery in sight.

  • Probably because they are.

The entire infrastructure of modern civilization rests on a single digit number of companies. How is this acceptable to anyone? Why is everyone just okay with this?

  • Biard did not think much of the Mi’kmaq, but reported that the feeling was mutual

Amazing. You go there to teach these heathen savages about the mercy of Christ, find that they practice the core virtues you want to teach them better than your own culture, and then you get irritated.

  • If it were only that, but traditionally 3rd party candidates are all the rage 2 weeks before the US elections, and then the day after the elections they're gone from the discourse, and you'll hear nothing about them for the next 4 years.

  • If you like black metal, Praznina and The Stone are amazing Serbian bands. Praznina's 2023 album "Čovek koji Nije" is one of my all time favourites

  • As Kropotkin wrote to Lenin in 1920

It would seem that the soviets should have served precisely this function of creating an organisation from below. But Russia has already become a Soviet Republic only in name. The influx and taking over of the people by the ‘party’, that’s is, predominantly the newcomers (the ideological communists are more in the urban centres), has already destroyed the influences and constructive energy of this promising institution – the soviets. At present, it is the party committees, not the soviets, who rule in Russia. And their organization suffers from the defects of bureaucratic organisation.

  • Yeah this happened once during the 2020 July protests in Serbia. As we walked, we passed a WW2 memorial and the guy leading the group took a moment to stop, comment on it and chant "death to fascism" a few times. Then out of the blue two guys started yelling "death to communism".

To be fair, "death to fascism, freedom to the people" is a communist slogan known by everyone from ex-Yugoslavia, but getting triggered by someone disavowing fascism right next to a statue that shows how fascists murdered civilians in raids in your own city is... worrying.

  • Great article! I agree that the left needs to better present its vision to the world, both as a concrete political proposal, as well as in general popular culture, things like art and stories that show the future.

I'm not sure if this is a thing already, but maybe monthly events could be organized here for reading and discussing specific solarpunk novels, competitions on creating solarpunk art etc? It would be one way to strenghten a specific image of the community that could be used to manifest ourselves to the world.
