Yet another refugee who washed up on the shore after the great Reddit disaster of 2023

  • I posted this below, but I used to be able to whistle in a way to make a modem or fax handshake and connect. Couldn't do any data, but I could make it connect.

  • My parlor trick back in the day was that when a call came in from a modem or fax, I could whistle in a way that it would connect. Couldn't do anything past that, but it was fun.

  • Oh, right, I forgot about that aspect.

  • Waterbeds suck, honestly. They're great for people who have a very consistent body temp and don't have a partner. Get warm or cold in the middle of the night? Tough, it takes ages to change the temp of a huge mass of water. Partner with a different comfort zone? Too bad.

  • Yeah, it validated the theory.

  • No, this study didn't deal with dark matter, that's not the missing matter they're taking about. They've known that the ordinary matter in the galaxies only accounts for a small fraction of the matter in the universe, and there were theories about how much matter was in the space between galaxies. This study looked at radio waves being emitted by distant sources, and looked at how much those waves were defracted by pasted through matter, which corroborated that yes, there's a lot of matter between galaxies.

  • Notice how so many christians will say that the problem with the world is a lack of emphasis on god (which is why we need prayer in school, etc.), but the vast majority of these murderers are conservative christians?

  • Christy Walton has been outspoken and supportive of the movement, but I haven't seen evidence that she's bankrolling it. She for sure doesn't speak for the company, which is more conservative.

  • Is that what Republicans mean when they say "Think of the children?"

  • One interesting thing at my local one in southern California: several people were waving large state flags. Lots of American flags as well, but I thought the state flags were interesting.

  • Article updated to say that an appeals court has overturned that ruling, so Trump ca still control them for now, unfortunately.

  • Plus it's a horrible job. My dad was also a general contractor, and where we live is very hot and dry in the summer. I remember, as a kid, seeing roofers on top of a house in 100+ F heat, mopping hot tar; I thought that must be the worst job there was. When I got older and started working in aerospace, when my boss would say he needed someone to do some unfun task, I'd always volunteer because I'd be thinking, "this is so much better than mopping tar on a hot roof."

  • During the Renaissance, there were certainly a lot of the weirdly adult baby Jesus paintings, but there were also realistic examples from the time (that one is Raphael, one of the great masters).

  • Made before Trump took office, right?

  • We must be about the same age. The VCR was a game changer. As I recall, the answering machine came just before it, and it's kind of amazing how fundamentally that changed things, too. People from more recent generations just don't get what a different paradigm it was when you couldn't necessarily contact your friends. You'd call their house, but if there wasn't an answer that didn't necessarily mean much. They might be outside, or maybe not home. Maybe they were on their bike heading to your house.

  • Well, yes to both. It's also clearly drawn by hand - basically a cartoon.

  • It's annual, so it's just total deaths that year.

  • I believe it's referring to the five people who died in 2023 in that submersible that was named "titanic."

  • The brownies don't look like they came from that pan. They taper at both ends, and they have rings/segments that the pan doesn't have.

Not the usual content here, but I rescued this little guy from the pool last night, and he was so cute!
