I've gotten away with not having to pay for restaurant food by putting the total cost in the tips section followed by a minus sign in front of it.

I'll use an example:

If the subtotal is $37.58 after taxes, just put -$37.58 for tips. Since the total is just subtotal + tips, 37.58 + -37.58 = $0.00.
