Hush Demonstrates Toe Dusting

From Hoo's Woods

Do Not Disturb!

Here is Hush our ambassador barn owl, displaying a unique behavior to barn owls referred to as "toe dusting." By fluffing her feathers and deliberately dusting her toes, she makes herself appear larger, more intense, and less approachable; a defense mechanism. This posture is meant to deter a perceived threat and clearly communicate that she wants space.

Barn owls don't hoot like many other owls, they screech, and this display is often paired with that sharp, raspy warning call. Hush doesn't do this often making this a rare moment to capture on video. Sorry to wake you Hush!

She is an 8-year-old, captive-bred barn owl who originated from the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis and has been with us for many years, helping us educate others about owl behavior, anatomy and adaptations.
