What is the general view of Hafez Assad?

After a brief post about Sadaam, here I wanted to ask about a similiar question about the Syrian Ba'ath leader.

Although I'm asking about Hafez specifically, feel free to speak about your knowledge of the Syrian Ba'ath as a whole because in my experience it's been difficult to find a principled ML stance on them.
