Burkina Faso: Russia Donates 700 Tons of Food to WFP for Vulnerable Populations
The World Food Programme (WFP) received a donation of food from the Russian Federation on July 22, 2025, for the most vulnerable populations in a food emergency situation.
The Russian Federation's donation to the World Food Programme (WFP) consists of more than 700 tons of yellow split peas. It is estimated to be worth 2.5 million US dollars, or nearly 1.5 billion CFA francs. According to WFP Country Representative and Director Sory Ouane, this contribution is "very" valuable in that it will enable them to support the Burkinabe government's emergency food assistance efforts.
Sory Ouane added that with this donation, WFP will be able to strengthen its emergency food assistance and ensure a sustainable, planned and agile response to evolving needs. This donation will be distributed primarily in areas with fragile ecological balance and affected by conflict.
"We will be working in the Sahel, North-Central, and North regions. These are areas that are truly affected by conflict, but where there are massive population displacements, but also where there are drought problems," he said.
Russian Chargé d'Affaires Igor Burkin justified the donation by the prevailing security situation in Africa, particularly in the Sahel. To address this situation, he explained that Russia has been providing WFP with a targeted annual contribution of $10 million to provide food support to African states since 2020. He praised WFP's efforts in its food assistance strategy, which enabled the representation to provide assistance to more than 500,000 Burkinabe people by May 2025.
"I am convinced that this humanitarian cooperation between the Russian Federation and the United Nations World Food Programme will continue to strengthen," said Igor Burkin.
