“We do not know the full details of Franke’s disciplinary case; we hold a wide range of views on the recent protests, the University’s response, and the underlying conflict in the Middle East; and we have no common position on the finding that Franke’s remark violated University policies. Nevertheless, we are united (1) in the belief that the reported allegations against Franke do not meet the University’s high bar for termination of tenure or the functional equivalent, and (2) in the concern that the University’s protections for academic freedom and political speech may have been undermined by its handling of this matter.”
