Just 43 percent of U.S. adults responded positively when asked whether NATO would follow through with its pledge to assist their home country if attacked — the lowest score among NATO’s 32 allies, the data showed, compared to a 57 percent alliance-wide average.

“It could be a reaction to the Trump rhetoric that he is putting into question solidarity to NATO’s Article 5” mutual defense clause, said Gerlinde Niehus, an independent security expert and former longtime NATO official, arguing that the narrative taking hold among the U.S. population was the “logical explanation for that drop.”
