This is classic “I don’t understand graffiti” behaviour.
Graffiti is about the act, not the final result. The artists not only don’t care if you cover it up after some time, they LIKE IT.
You were just giving them a fresh canvas to play with over and over lol.
Also, graffiti is beautiful, human, and improves the community almost without exception.
If you think scribbling swear words and spraypainting swastikas and racial epithets all over your community “improves” it, I don’t know what to tell you.
Some graffiti can indeed be artistic, I’m with you there. That’s not the kind I was painting over, though.
