A new state law limits Florida communities’ aims to offset greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the global climate and intensifying disasters such as hurricanes.

Specifically, HB 1217 prohibits local governments from pursuing net-zero emissions goals. At least 10 cities and counties have implemented such policies, including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Orlando, and Leon County, where Tallahassee, the state capital, is located. But the new law will not necessarily upend these policies, said Bradley Marshall, senior attorney at Earthjustice, an advocacy group.

“It’s certainly meant to scare municipalities and local governments from trying to do things to further net-zero policies,” he said. “Now, its exact impact and what it exactly prohibits is probably up for some debate. Things that are adjacent to it—emissions reductions and even climate change reduction policies—on their face will not run afoul at all of a ban on adopting a net zero policy.”

For fucks sake. Are we only going to have a choice between the far left or the far right in this country?

You’re new here, the established Democrats are not and have never been “far left.” There is no “far left” party in this country that runs candidates all over it. So it’s far right and less right parties with a few outliers that the Democrats treat like unwanted step children.

As well, what’s wrong with the far left policies? Healthcare not insurance for all. UBI. Tax structure that actually affects the wealthy. Education for all including college. Stronger unions, weaker company power, more worker’s rights, more consumer’s rights.

You’ll find your conversations much more effective when you don’t begin them by being patronizing. My point is that neither party has been able to solve our problems.

You’ll find your conversations much less patronizing when you don’t begin them by being loudly wrong. Aside from being wrong about one of the two major parties in the US being “far left,” you’re also wrong that neither has been able to solve problems. You don’t see blue states lining up to make renewable energy illegal. It’s not Democrats making mandatory water breaks for construction workers during summer illegal. Republicans consistently make life worse for their constituents. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend the Dems are even remotely perfect, but you have to be genuinely delusional to look at red states and blue states side by side and say neither party is solving problems. Even at the city level, New York City is famously fixing lots of problems recently after electing an extremely popular Democratic Socialist.

For clarity, the actual political compass, left to right, in the 20th and 21st centuries:

Far left: Let’s abolish governments via revolution, education, prosperity, and individual freedoms within a collective frame work. A space where everyone gets what they need and is free to pursue what they want beyond their needs, without ever having to fear being homeless or hungry because they aren’t ‘productive’ enough. How we get there is in dispute but that center-left guy might be alright. Or too reformist. We don’t know we stopped reading theory made after the 1920s. Also who cares about your immutable characteristics, we should make sure everyone is treated equitably, sure, but we should work to abolish race, gender, sex, and all traditional roles in society so we can make something better.

Center-left: Let’s establish a new type of government by the people for the people in all ways, including economically wherein work is correctly assigned to be something that allows you to live life, not something wherein you live to work, a government designed to take care of the people. Maybe even someday we can have a society advanced enough it won’t need a central government. Also immutable characteristics are protected, though we can’t always agree on what’s immutable.

Center: Let’s reform capitalism again and hope it works this time, but gay people are okay and I guess blacks are people now, but as long as the rich stay rich who cares who the poors fuck or what colour they are. And fine you can have healthcare… as long as the UbermI mean Capitalists don’t lose revenue. I guess we can just raise taxes to pay those capitalists whatever they ask so they don’t lose too much money.

Center-right: Reform capitalism? Hell no. Capitalism is fine the way it is and the only reason it isn’t better is because the government interferes with the Ubermench’s right to rule how they see fit. Clearly if you’re not rich you’re not worthy of being rich, otherwise you’d be rich, so why would we listen to you? Also blacks are even lower class than poor whites and gays go against God.

Far-right: Capitalism? Oh you poor little untermench. The ruling class has no need for the illusion of capital. We know you’re inferior. You know you’re inferior. We know we’re going to exterminate you while pretending we’re deporting you. You know we’re going to exterminate you while pretending we’re deporting you. After all with how dirty you’ve made the blood of the nation you know you don’t belong here and should be punished. Why even worry about it. Just give us the keys to power and we’ll make sure to kill you after the communists in the far left. Then the socialists in the center-left. Those in the center and center-right will never rebel against us, in fact historically they’re the only ones that have ever put us in power. That’s a majority of ideologies rooting for us, at least when the alternative is you untermenches getting together and pretending you’re equal to your superiors.

There is no Far left politician in power in the United States. There has never been a far left politician in power in the united states. There have been fewer than 40 center-left politicians in power in the totality of US history, and most of them died before you were born. You can name maybe 3 if you’re really into New York politics.

Every other politician has been center to far-right, with over 80% of all politicians at all levels of government in US history having been center-right. This includes all parties. Especially democrats.
