This is simultaneously:

• actually a legitimate investigation into misconduct from before and during the time he was VP
• a political witch hunt
• rank hypocrisy

The second one, imo, is by far the most prominent reason why this is being done now, by this regime. But the first point is nonetheless pertinent.
