The sudden announcement that irrigation flows to Greater Vernon-area orchards and farms will be reduced to a relative trickle is amplifying concerns about water scarcity across the Okanagan.

On Thursday, the Regional District of North Okanagan announced it is mandating a 70 per cent reduction in water use for agricultural users.

The move is unprecedented, but officials say the region has never faced “a drought this severe.”

“Given the state of reservoir levels, this reduction is required to merely maintain water flows throughout the summer and fall,” RDNO communications officer Stacey Raftus said in an emailed statement.
