Some people will argue not being allowed tech, kids will be left out socially. My soon to be 13 year old, has not had this happen.
Unless you count the one time a kid told my son he’d rather play games on his computer, than come play outside, there’s not been a downside for him socially thus far. Kid makes friends everywhere he goes, and loves to read. My son sits for his lunch with a book. I’ve taken up reading books in the waiting rooms, so he doesnt see me scrolling like these other parents do. It’s been fine. Ive had people literally yell at me it will ruin them socially.
My son, and the other screen free kids in the neighborhood, are the only ones you ever see. My neighbors all love him, he helps the elderly lady nextdoor with yard work, and chit chats with them often. One day a few weeks ago, I forgot the kids had a half day. I got a call from my neighbor, my son was home, wondering where I was. Thankfully just up the street at the grocery store, but he did exactly what I told him to do if he was ever in trouble and we werent home. He has a sense of community irl and I love that.
Across the street right here, two children live, one in middleschool, one in highschool. You never see them. It does make me sad. The younger one played for two days with my son, and then never came out again because he preferes his computer. I blame the parents, this (at the time) ten year old, couldnt run, at all. He said to me one day, “yeah I sit on the couch, I sit on my bed, I sit at my computer” and was just rattling off places he likes to sit around his house, like it was a joke.
