Hello, fairly new to lemmy and a enjoyer of FOSS here. I just wanted to ask if anyone of yall could teach me some stuff about guns, what are some good resources to learn, like how to use them and stuff, where i am we have very strict gun laws and i dont know if i can get a gun for a while. But i would like to learn. So please, teach me, give me resources and tell me what i need to know, thanks.

  • Honestly, a first step without getting involved with the military or having family and friends teach you would probably some form of hunter’s education classes. What’s actually offered is very dependent on the area where you live, but they are usually offered because you would need to take a course or a test to be allowed to hunt depending on laws. The courses don’t usually involve any actual hunting or violence against animals. But usually safety around guns and local laws about hunting. And usually firing a gun a few times, just to make sure you know how to load and fire it, not working on any proficiency in aim. But that should get you enough grounding to join a gun club or go to a shooting range to practice.

Own a musket for home defense, since that’s what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. “What the devil?” As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball-sized hole through the first man, he’s dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it’s smoothbore and nails the neighbor’s dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grapeshot, “Tally ho lads” the grapeshot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Nothing will ever replace hands on training in a class or instructor. I’m even wary of friends with guns teaching anything because I have seen some dumb shit on the range from “experienced” owners.

    • 1st is find out why you want to shoot. Fun? Self-defence? Competition? Etc.
    • 2nd is find out what you want to shoot. Skeet? Target? Pistol? Rifle? Etc.
    • 3rd, take your class/training based on that and get recommendations on your first purchase, if possible rent or try out what you think you’d like before buying.
    • 4th practice again and again.

you may have some skeet shooting clubs or pistol target shooting around. There’s also a few shooting sports in the olympics and that stuff is culturally separated from other kinds of shooting, so the competition is less stiff than you might expect.

If you don’t live in AmeriKKKa, you may have a local practical shooting competition or IPSC chapter, shooting with one of these organizations will build real skills.

What are you trying to learn? How to shoot a particular style, competition, hunting, home defense, etc.? Are you just looking to know your way around a platform and effectively hit a target consistently? As others have said, classes will help massively with that.

If you’re looking for a crash course, start with “always, never, never”. Always treat the gun like it’s loaded. Never put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to fire. Never point the weapon at something you don’t intend to shoot.

Getting better at firearms is mostly about practice, I’ve found.

Not sure yet, I mostly want to learn how to shoot. But I would like to learn home / self defense, also for fun because i like guns, and also maybe hunting to. As for what ill be shooting, probably bolt action or leaver action rifles like a Lee en field, because being in Australia, they are very common and also getting hold of a pistol is near impossible and means a very big hassle, with all the laws around it. As much as i would like a pistol, a bolt action rifle is probably the best way at the moment.

Also just a side note its amazing that there is a leftist / non conservative space to talk about guns.

depending on your area, you may find gun safety courses you can enroll in. if you can find some, choose the one that also includes first aid for a gunshot wound. sometimes these are offered by off-duty police, so be careful too.
