Dubbed the “artificial sun,” the Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (BEST) is under construction in Hefei, east China’s Anhui Province. The BEST facility represents one of China’s major ventures into controlled nuclear fusion and is poised to attempt the world’s first fusion energy power generation demonstration.

BEST reactor is best? I love how China outpaces liberal-democratic at its cold war era peak with STEM progress and it isn’t even close.
AND they’re just doing it for the love of the game-
There’s no real competition (except in a couple of areas, like LLMs before they stomped the Americans on that first try) or threat of hot war as an immediate external motivator.
I don’t see why this can’t or won’t just continue indefinitely tbh. I’d be so much more doomer if China wasn’t constantly reminding me that the future will be in very capable hands.
Also I love the megastructure vibes from those construction photos. Waow.
