    Yes, because burning down your source of food is such a good idea.

    The people illustrated here wouldn’t even have to pay taxes in money. They would give a percentage of their produce. If the harvest is bad, they give less.

      Many feudal duties included both fixed and percentage extraction from the peasantry. The transition to paying taxes in money in the 13th and 14th centuries was regarded by many of the impoverished as an improvement over the prior state of affairs, because money can be more easily stored as the benefit of a good year than can crops.
