i’ve been reading thru hexbear’s code of conduct to make sure i don’t break any rules and one part of it confused me a bit. in the “topics that must be CW’d” section, one of the bullet points says the following:

“Violence towards animals or humans such as corpses and carnist products…

in what context would you CW something with carnist products in them? is mentioning non vegan food by itself fine? does it apply to images or to text too? in what case would a comment/ post be removed to enforce this rule? i am not vegan (will go vegan eventually, i’m still adjusting to eating less meat) so i’m not sure how to follow the rule. any help is appreciated.

The main point for understanding the majority of the rules is to ask yourself, does this alienate a comrade? We have several vegan comrades on the site.

Images of meat and dairy. Though I might also CW if you mention these things. I’ve given CWs in the mega when I mention cooking with meat or animal products.

It’s very simple: if your post contains a picture or description of food, you need to include a content warning that it includes food. Especially in the /c/food community. Any food could potentially be prepared using animal products, which could be hurtful to some comrades.

          cws for sexual violence, femicide

It was a criticism of the way the OP expressed interest, but not commitment to a vegan lifestyle. A comparison was made between OP and a person who still abducted and murdered women, but less than they used to, and was pledging to eventually stop entirely. The sexual violence was what was being committed to the hypothetical women in the metaphor, not the kind enabled by carnists.

            why i'm not vegan

tried being vegan once, my health tanked, went back to meat and my health improved. i am not in the position in my life where i can gamble with my health again but i’m trying to at least eat less non vegan food. which is why i specifically added the (will go vegan eventually, i’m still adjusting to eating less meat) to the post.

If it was you being really really really tired it likely was B12 insufficiency. I had that and taking some remedied the situation.

Also what about the non-dietary aspects of veganism?

following what i can. ditched all the non dietary products that aren’t vegan (toiletries + buying new clothes, although i’m still unsure about buying non vegan second hand items). on a vegan diet my brain felt like it stopped working entirely. insane brain fog and hallucinations, had to double my meds to keep myself together. skin looked like i had jaundice and hair fell out in clumps. went to get my bloodwork done and everything seemed fine (even B12), but i decided to go back to carnism (still mostly plant based) and my health returned to normal. yes, i supplemented what was needed, but i guess it didn’t work. right now i’m working with my psychiatrist and nutritionist to slowly transition to at least being vegetarian, but i’m trying to be as careful as possible so to not fuck my body up again.

you might look into freeganism, there’s more to it but they’ll dumpster-dive animal products. seems more sensible to me in general.
