Since last year, Georgia’s European Union accession process has completely stalled. However, the country’s First Deputy Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili has told Euronews that the government still aims to join the bloc by 2030.
More than a decade ago I had a course together with a Georgian exchange student and it was a massive surprise for me when she very matter-of-factly referred to herself as a “European”. It would have never occurred to me that there could be some kind of European identity beyond the Black Sea back then and it still somewhat makes me cock my head. But then again who am I to judge, the more the merrier.
I lived in Georgia for a few months and can say without at doubt it is absolutely European. I think it helps that Georgians have very close ties with the rest of eastern Europe. Sadly, given the state of the government at the moment, the road to joining the EU is looking very long and uncertain, but I have hope that it will happen one day.
