The EU Arctic Strategy sets out how the EU will work with its Member States, Arctic partners, local communities and Indigenous Peoples to strengthen security, respond to climate change, support sustainable economic development and put people living in the Arctic at the centre of this approach.

  • Pan-Arctic Cable: The EU will support secure, resilient submarine cable connectivity linking Greenland directly to Europe, with potential future extensions towards Canada and Japan. This project builds on existing EU investments and international digital partnerships.

  • IRIS² Arctic Connectivity: Developed by the EU, IRIS² will provide secure satellite connectivity for government communications, with additional satellites planned to expand coverage across the Arctic in cooperation with EU countries and partners.

  • EU Polar Research Hub : A new EU Polar Research Hub will strengthen the link between science and policy. By reinforcing the European Polar Coordination Office, it will better connect research, observation and scientific infrastructure, improve access to research resources and strengthen coordination including with Indigenous Peoples.

    As someone who works for a US fiber backbone provider, I love seeing these kinds of headlines. Our country is going to crash and burn. It’s definitely encouraging to see the rest of the world build up infrastructure that doesn’t rely on us.
