Damn, I completely forgot about that site.

I don’t remember the exact context, but when I was still in high school a classmate of mine casually asked us about Redtube when he meant to say Youtube, so now we knew what he watched in his spare time.

Of course we immediately recognized his mistake, which says something about our porn consumption as well, but it was still one hell of a Freudian slip

And “YouTube Premium” used to be “YouTube Red”, which had to be intentional and probably led to others making a similar mistake to your classmate.

Redtube was around before youtube started “youtube red”; my assertion is that someone at youtube had to be aware of this. It was either (1) a gooner-brained employee who got away with it because none of his coworkers knew about RedTube; or (2) whose coworkers were too polite/embarrassed to admit to knowing about RedTube; or (3) everyone with any amount of power over the naming process was too ignorant/lazy to Google for any potential overlap and see that it might have been a problem for grandma to Google “tube” and “red” and maybe accidentally click on a porn site instead of youtube when looking for a subscription. It’s irresponsable either way.

Ah ok, that makes sense. Still, I think even if the coincidence wasn’t intentional they had to know at some point.

Probably early on, because rumors spread like wildfire and simply knowing about Redtube as a polite co-worker doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a regular. You can just say a friend told you about the site. Problem solved.
