This is a pallid bat, the official state bat of California.

I have an old furnace chimney attached to my house that is sealed off from the house. Generations of a family of bats have been living there for over 10 years. Every evening during the summer three or four of them fly all around my house, catching bugs out of the air. If I stand on my porch, sometimes they’ll fly so close I can feel the wind from their leathery wings on my face. I like to think they’ve gotten to know me over the years. They make an audible chirping sound, and it’s the highlight of my day. Happy Bat Appreciation Month!

That’s so cool! One of these days I will install a bat box and hopefully enjoy my own little visitors.

We have entire flocks of giant fruit bats where I live. Their silhouette against the scenic sunset is stunning.
