Lithuania’s government on Wednesday approved a draft legislation banning Russian and Belarusian nationals from purchasing property in areas located near strategic sites, even if they hold residence permits.

Belarusian nationals without residence permits would also be barred from buying property, while Russians were banned from doing so in a previous bill.

The restrictions would not apply where ownership is acquired through inheritance. ​ If approved by the Seimas, the amendments would come into force on January 1 next year.

Latvia and Finland previosuly banned Belarusian and Russian nationals from purchasing property, with exceptions for those who hold residence permits in the respective countries. Estonia is now planning to introduce a similar ban.
