Nobody is defending lashing. It’s the Claim that lashes are part of Iranian culture that’s being questioned, as it enables scapegoating and dehumanisation of a people based on nationality; a good example is the genocide within Gaza and how it was largely whitewashed by claiming the actions of hamas equal the actions of Palestinians.
It’s no different to claiming that the abduction and rape/torture of citizens based on ethnicity is American culture… I’m not American, but i’d assume there’s widespread disgust at all the concentration camps ICE have set up and inhumane treatment going on inside them, so wouldn’t claim it’s part of American culture, but just because I won’t brandish every American as a rapist doesn’t mean I agree with rape and torture.
I don’t think anyone is claiming that this is part of Iranian culture. At most, it’s part of islamic culture and more specifically the Twelver sect of Shi’a Islam
Most Iranians don’t want anything to do with this shit
most Iranians don’t want anything to do with this shit
Exactly that mate. Problem with the definition of ‘which culture OP meant’ is that it’s all just conjecture on both our ends.
All we can say for certain, is that OP made a statement about a culture being primitive and promptly exited stage right.
We’re now all left here farting over whether they were talking about all Iranians, all Muslims, or a specific subset of Muslim culture with their blanket statement.
Dehumanisation based on culture/ethnicity/race etc… is a tried and tested fascist playbook that at best is designed to divide the working classes, but can lead to far worse situations, like ethnic cleansing and genocide.
I’m certainly no authority on the matter, I just think it’s best to err against using such language, Lest we play into our oppressors hands and so forth.
Who’s talking about dehumanisation? There’s nothing inhuman about any of this
And why wouldn’t we be allowed to judge people based on their culture? If that culture is based on extreme misogyny we shouldn’t be afraid to call it out
The original comment calls their culture primitive, which is a textbook case of dehumanisation.
There’s been a war between America and Iran for most of this year. For this one specifically, the reason to avoid rhetoric aimed at Iran’s culture is to protect yourself from the effects of ongoing war propaganda.
But in general, It’s dangerous to allow yourself to judge a group of people in ways that make them “others.” That’s what turns thoughts like “they’re a primitive culture” into “well, our bombs are doing the world a favour”.
Germans didn’t just wake up and gas people overnight, it was through conditioning that started with seemingly innocuous comments that ultimately led to war & genocide.
Yeah if calling out a group of people for acting like it’s the dark ages makes you want to gas them, maybe it’s a you problem? Being afraid to criticize this creates some problems of its own
Well if your culture contains lashing women for something like this, still kinda weird to want to defend it
