usually there is at least a little bit of distance between the voices that give the anti-communist propaganda and the institutions that get the most distrust from anarchists. like, they would be distrustful of the US State Department, but when the same things are said by US academics (like Chomsky) or “independent media” there is enough perceived separation that they don’t think about it too hard.

Pretty sure they just instinctively believe all “bad things” they hear about any & all systems that have functioned to serve the interests of some class or other. This would explain why an anarchist will call out the US empire in reasonable detail regarding its countless atrocities but also deny the utter ineptitude of the few anarchist projects that have ever existed. And when confronted with the successess of AES, they will just deflect toward red scare propaganda & deny those successes, using pro-capitalist scholarship from the countries they supposedly can’t stand (usually their own, usually USA) to back those deflections.

I mean, on the idea of the states always serving the interests of one class over another, they are not wrong. They just do not realize that the working class can be the class in power. They want to reach some magical fairyland of no classes and no state, basically skipping to communism. In that way they are not completely wrong, just misguided in method.
