TLDR:
Windows 11 v24H2 and beyond will have Recall installed on every system. Attempting to remove Recall will now break some file explorer features such as tabs.

Because it will run jellyfin, with fewer system resources, and still get security updates (that you can configure to auto install at the correct time) for … free.

You also won’t at some point find yourself running such an old version of Windows that jellyfin no longer updates unless you buy the latest version of Windows.

You can just go download Ubuntu desktop LTS and do everything by just opening a terminal, plopping that one liner, and letting it run: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/installation/linux/#repository-automatic

I’ll flip the script and ask “why in the world would you use Windows for something that doesn’t require it?”

Because Its already installed, working fine, and I don’t need it, I believe the very first thing I said is “in pretty sure my dedicated jellyfin server will be fine”

Which once again, means I don’t care about security updates on that computer, why would I put in extra work? Because it’s Lemmy’s favorite browser?

Who cares, windows works just fine in that use case

I really wish more people took security seriously. Something that is not receiving security updates is not working just fine.

Just make sure your network firewall is good I guess. That’s the only proper way to run outdated stuff and even then it’s sketchy.

Also it’s an operating system not a browser.

Something that has no important data on it whatsoever is absolutely working just fine, and yeah, I had a slip of the tongue, but you bringing it up is a sign you’re out of arguing points, so here’s one. Lemmy is absolutely falling victim to what reddit fell to, echo chambers. Linux is Lemmy’s favorite operating system, and it’s users will defend it to the death and not reason beyond that veil.

I actually can prove this, go ahead, simply try and come up with a sincere advantage windows has over Linux, market superiority, user familiarity and accessibility, software compatibility, I bet you cant without saying “there are no advantages” or adding a “but”

That’s my problem with Lemmy and Linux, I don’t even like windows myself but you’re all such fanboys that you make the prospect of Linux just insufferable because of how you can’t have an unbiased discussion about the different OS’.

Buddy, you have a genuine problem in that you’re refusing security updates. Never mind the importance of your data, a system that’s not receiving patches can become part of a bot net using your bandwidth to perform DDoS attacks, it can be used as a springboard to infect other systems, and it can be used to spy on you (if not directly via hardware sensors, MAC spoofing based MITM is a thing), it can lead to hardware level compromises (by infecting the BIOS), it can be used as a proxy for illegal activity, and probably some other stuff I’m not thinking of right now.

If you want to update to Windows 11, I fully accept that as a valid choice.

This is not a Linux vs Windows issue. This is “I don’t like what Windows has become in 11 … and I will not be getting security updates on Windows 10 soon.” So, your valid options to be responsible are A) get over it and update to 10, Microsoft owns Windows, you do what they do if you want to run Windows, B) install Linux, C) buy a Mac and host it on that, D) install FreeBSD and host it on that, E) write your own operating system, F) find some other niche operating system.

So when I suggest “just install Linux and fix your problem” it’s not fan-boy-ism; it’s accepting the reality that what you’re doing is a bad idea and you shouldn’t do it.
