The talks were temporarily suspended in June as the new Social Democrat-led government restructured the cabinet.

The ministry said strengthening economic cooperation with Taiwan remains a long-term foreign policy priority and that Lithuania aims to sign an economic cooperation action plan once negotiations are completed.

The ministry said Lithuania’s position on Taiwan remains unchanged and that it seeks to deepen practical cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, including trade, business, education, science, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

Lithuania and Taiwan have sought to deepen economic ties since the Taiwanese Representative Office opened in Vilnius in 2021 … The opening of the representative office triggered a sharp deterioration in relations between Lithuania and China. Beijing viewed the decision to allow the office to use the name “Taiwanese” rather than the more common “Taipei” as support for Taiwan’s efforts to assert greater international standing.
