This is a quick update about the status of Briar. Short version: the project is still active but we’re only making essential security updates and bugfixes for now. Long version: For several years we’ve been trying to find solutions to some of the longstanding issues with Briar, such as high battery usage and unreliable background operation on Android, missing features like account backup and file attachments, and a difficult user experience for adding contacts and communicating offline.

      There are thankfully still plenty of decentralized messaging apps. Delta Chat, Simplex, and Matrix come to mind.

      btw, have you used Briar a lot? Because I’ve found the user interface with the “forums” to be painful, especially the more I try using it.

        I use it almost daily but only to a single contact (the one I could convince to use this). I have tried delta and simplex but could not get excited about them.

        I have no experience with the foeuma option in Briar. Sounds interesting enough.

        I’m not a very social individual (introvert)
